THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW A. W. MARKLE Publlshod Evory Friday At 117 Wost Burlington Stroot. OJCM FOLGER'S TEA SALE 1 Tn RnviKW is entered nt post office In Saint Johns, Oregon , ns mnll matter of the second class under the Act of Con rress of March 3, 1879. Offldal ITswspaptr of Ih Olty of St. Joins, Subscription prloe $1.00 par year. A crcat deal 01 publicity is beinp; given the proposition of mercinc St. Johns with Tort land in the city dailies. The OrcBonian, Telegram and Jour nal rather favor the idea, while the Evening News remains ncu tral. D.C.Lewis has been work' intt with the Bamo vigor in Port land as in St. Johns to complete merger. Communications from Mayor A. A. Muck und A. W. Davis favoring the movement have also been published in the city papers. The Hoard of Trade of Portland has endorsed the measure upon solicitation of pro motors, while the Central Labor Council decided not to recom mend it. The Evening News has the following to say regarding the question: The News has been asked to advise its ftaders how to vote on annexing St. Johns and Linn ton. The Ncwb is not going to advise regarding this thing, but it is going to outline a few facts; n little history, and let you make up your own minds. First of all, do you know of n reason why taxes keep climbing up You ore iniormecl by various wise people that it is because tho city is growing; you imagine that means because it has more people. You aro wrong. Taxes go up because there aro not enough people added to carry the load tho square miles of new tor ritory add. TiilH town today is bigger In area than European citicB with five times its population. These wide spaces, miles and miles of them with only an occa sionnl house, have pavements, comcnt walks, water mains, sewers; they have police protoc lion and lire protection and in spectors and parks and all the things that taxes go for, and tiicso big areas cost a lot more than their population repays in the way or taxes. How came these big ureas tho city? Chiefly hecauso real estate speculators wanted them in. Country real estate assessed at $100 an acre becomes city prop orty when once over the imag nary lino. Tho farm property then go Ui free (lro and police protection and all the benollls of community life and the promoter sells his $100 acre cut in eight lots nt $800 or ho a lot to some poor worker, who takes up the added tax burden; in time he has to pavo the street and build cement walks and sowers and tho rent; tho speculator has meantime grabbed another addi tion. Waterfront proporty at St. Johns and Linuton is just as good under any name, but it doesn't sell ns well back east as when called Port and waterfront. Get that little idea lixed well and you will understand several things. ino report mado by the stir voyors as to St. Johns and Linn- ton show that Linnton is going to bo n burden; St. Johns proba bly will not be, though the boostors out that way for annex ation secured votes by telling tneir leuow citizens tnnt if tiioy enmo into I'ortiand taxes wouli bo lower, and thoy would got more, it tiioy do. I'ortiaiu ax payers will foot tho bill; but bo tnat as it may, St. Johns is not so much outside our proper linos. seeing that we have reached out and taken in about all tho pen insula, any now; nut Linnton is something e so turn in: a narrow fringo along the river with some residenco property above, it is itsou about evenly divided over ii . a . . me annexation question and so far as 1 ho News can discover, the only loiks overly eager for Us coming in aro realty specula tors. The Glorious Fourth St. Johns residents should be gin to plan to celebrate at Col- umbin Turk, Monday, July 6th in which tho whole Peninsula district will participate. Sonio of the good things 111 store are: brand parade at 1U:30 a. 111, Iiaseball game. 1 Old time picnic dinner at noon. Literary exercises and speak ing by the Governor. Hand concert, games and Bports. The best people will be thoro to have the best timo of their lives at tho best park in tho city. n .. r '11 ... UUIHC UUHlllllUt'U.
