Mayor Muck has shown admir able Iudurment and fair minded ncss in retaining all tho old an nointive officers. He realized that they have all been perform ing their duties in an excellent manner, and that to make a chanire for the short time St. Johns has to live would not be beneficial to the city. The no lice department, with John PofT as chief, have kept the city in most orderly condition. It has been repeatedly said by visitors to our city that St. Johns is tho cleanest and most moral city that they have discovered in all their travels. And it is true. The records show less crime and fewer arrests than in any city of its size in the United States, is is said. This is due in large measure to eilicicnt police ser vice. Chief PofT is a man who is manifestly just to all. Ho treats ono and all alike, and ex ecutcs his duty without fear or favor, and he is ever on the job. He is a man of sound judgment. careful, faithful nnd thoroughly competent. Many dissolute per sons as they float in here havo been ordered to leave tho city. which is considered bettor policy than to arrest and fine them. In this way undcsirablo characters havo little opportunity to make St. Johns thoir habitation. In unite of tho fact that St. Johns hns four saloons there is but lit tie drunkenness in evidence. Policemen Muck, Norcno and Jones.assistants under Mr. PofT, aro also efficient and and make most excellent polico officers. It would be a most difficult thing to determine how much crimo has been prevented by huving a faithful, and efficient police force. Hough characters goner nlly find out how a plnco is po liccu boforo attempting to com mit doprcdations, and that tho reason St. Johns is given n wide berth by them. Tho people of St. Johns in general will feel well content if tho city of Port land, after merging hns taken place, will continuo Chief PofT nnd his assistants on tho polico force in bt. Johns.
