From England and Holland there arrived on November 23rd 23 tons of rare blossoming shrubs and bulbs consigned to tho Horticultural Department of the Exposition. With those was a large assortment of un named roses entered in the $1,000 competition. Get in the contest. Governor Blcaso of South Carolina has sot freo 1644 prisoners in that state during tho past four years. Thero ought to be somo national law to prevent such imbecility on the part of a governor. If crime does not run rampage in South Carolina henceforth it will not bo Governor Blcasc's fault. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Derrio entertained the Jolly 'Steen club in a delightful manner Wednes- ay evening. Ihe game of 500 was tho principal diversion, fol- owed by delicious refresh ments. The first pnzo was won by Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Muck; the second by Mr. and Mrs. ngledue, and tho guest prize by Miss Mildenhall. The Portland Woolen Mills Company on Thursday of last week gave a turkey dinner to their employes at tho plant. Manager E. L. Thompson was nresent. greeted the employes and carved tho turkey. A num ber of turkeys and pumpkin pies were left over, uncut after tho company had feasted, and these were distributed among the poor f St. Johns. The Bachelor Club expended $250 at Christmas time in'reliev- ing the needy of St. Johns. which sum was realized from the charity entertainment given by the club in Multnomah theatre previously. Great care was exercised in placing the pro visions, which were purchased with the money, where they were most worthily needed. Surely St. Johns has much rea son to feel proud of its Bachelor Club. Just ten minutes before the Southern Pacific train was due at Oregon City Saturday morn ing a monster boulder, weighing several top of tracks, a few yards south of the depot. The big boulder broke into several pieces when it struck. Several holes were torn in the crushed granite station platform. One thousand tons of plants rom the Imperial Department of Agriculture, Tokyo, nrrived from Japan on November 23 on the docks of the Panama Ex position. This shipment is to bo used to beautify the garden surrounding the Japanese pavil ion. There also arrived with this shipment 520 tons of ex liblts for the Pnlace of Liberal Arts and Manufactures. This is the fourth large consignment lrom Japan to the expos tion. Get in the contest. The above wo refer to tho young men of St.Johns for their consideration and to devise somo means of keeping the girls frpm worrying, imi. The city authorites have quite an army of men at work cutting wood on tho untton tract in tho northern part of tho city. Mr. Gatton is paid $1.25 per cord tor the wood and the men re ceive ono dollar a cord for cut ting. It will be sold on the ground for nbout $2.50 per cord, the zbc per cord protit going to ofray expense of measuring. and overseeing the work. It appears that little difficulty will be experienced in disposing of le wood, as the schools, city tall and other institutions will absorb considerable, whilo a number of private citizens have expressed a willingness to tako portion of it. We under stand there are about 30 acres of wood to cut in all. The business 'men's delega tion from Multnomah county las been holding sessions twice week for a month trying to map out a retrenchment pro gram that shall cut oil at least a million dollars. Five important con solidation bills to cut out at east a million dollars of fixed harges are being framed and will be put up to the legislature with the option to pass them or have them initiated. One will put all the various land and water boards and engineering and surveying projects under one head. Another will con solidate the various labor and compensation boards and com missions into one department. third will consolidate all the domestic animal and veterinary unctions under one head or board. A fourth will unite the various medical and health boards into a single function or health department. The fifth will consolidate five or six high er educational boards and com missions into a board of three. hese bills will be constructed to simplify service, eliminate duplication and reduce expense. THE plan is an excellent one, and can be applied to a number of commendable enterprises. The small amounts payable weekly into the Club can be spared by each person without in convenience, and when a number of persons associate together for a special purpose the combined results of their efforts will be a large sunt which may be applied as a 'Christmas offering or used in other ways for a good cause. First Prize Awarded The first weekly prize given in the San Francisco Exposition Contest now on was received by Mrs. Elsa Knowles, which con sisted of u set of silver knives nnd forks. Only thrco entered the contest the first week, which closed Tuesday evening, but a number of others huve intimated that they will soon enter tho race. The next prize to bo giv en will bo awarded next Tuesday evening, consisting of half dozen silver orange spoons. Now is the time to enter the contest.
