Plant Shade Trees
Groshnm is far boliisiil the
time in the matter of tree plant
ing. A young growing city with
the good prospects that this one
lias should give especial attention
to the beautifying of its streets.
This can best be done now by a
systematic setting out of shade
and ornamental trees along our
streets. All beautiful cities have
given attention to this, invari
ably early in their history, and
now attract the well-to-do home
seeker and suburban resident.
Plans should be formulated and
each property owner work to
further the same along his street
or avenue, in his district, and in
the city at largo, so far as possible.-
Gresham Outlook.
This would apply to St. Johns
with equal force. Next to fine
residences with well kept lawns,
well puved streets and walks,
and buildings or architectural
beauty, nothing can add more to
the attractiveness of a city or
town than shade trees, whether
along the curb or upon the lawn.
What is more delightful than
the approach to some of our East
ern towns through long linos of
trees which furnish shade from
the hot summer hum? Did you
ever see a city or town that was
called beautiful which did not
have many tree lined streets'
Plant shade trees and still further
enhance the wondrous beauty
of St. .Johns. And it is not
bad idea to plant fruit trees i
your gardens, as well.
The Only Abstainers
Dogs and horses seem to be
about the only animals that ai
total abstainers. Performing
bears can easily be taught to uo
dUire the toiiacco hum l and once
tlioy have it they do not give i
up unless they are absolutely
forced to do so. Goats, on the
other hand, appear to pro Tor the
cigarette and take kindly
smoking it from the Hint. Dro
medaries and camels likewise are
most addicted to the weed, am
when they areunder its inlluence
can lie made to do almost any
thing.
The driver carries a triangular
piece of wood which is piorcei
at one end like a cigar lioldui
This is inserted in the beast's
mouth, the cigar then lit au
pressed into the hole. Immedi
ately the camel closes his oyes
and pull's away through his
mouth and nostrils until the cigar
is out ro y consumed.
It seems to enjoy to the full the
experience anil also to derive
from it a decided stimulant, for
tiiougn it may nave neon reiuiv
to drop from fatigue before, ft
will plod on afterwards for m es.
It is not easy to break it of the
habit, either, t timels have been
known to stum thcnuielvos do-
liburately after they have once
nuuuired the taste if limy nru
not given their smoke nt regular
