EditorTho Review: Tho Review has boon running an advertise ment of Hot Lake Springs, Ore gon, and it might be your readers would like to know what gives the writers of such springs their great heat and efficiency. Tho warning recently issued by the Agricutural Department, Washington, regarding the worthlessness of bottled water from springs heavily charged with radio activity is timely. This publicity, given because of the newly established theory that these waters obtain their heat and efficacy from their radio activity, has attracted much at tention to those springs which have been converted to health resorts. The government warn ing is that, while these waters, in their natural state, are of the greatest benefit tc suffering hu manity, yet, when tho water is bottled, it soon loses its eflicacy and within twelve hours becomes absolutely worthless. Analytical investigation, of- ficnlly conducted under the direc tion of our own National govern ment, as well as that of Great Britain, has established the fact that this radio activity is obtain ed by the water passing over a large deposit of pitch blende, the substance from which radium is gotten. The bubbles which constantly come to tno sunaceoi tne waters of Hot Springs are not so much from the heat as from their radio activity. They are in fact a radio emanation--a gas produced by the water coming in contact with the pitch blende. The greater tho radio activity the more heat, and, as a consequence, the more ellicacious the wntor. Hot Springs, having tho hot test natural waters known to the civilized world, naturally possess the greatest amount of radio activity. The main spring has a natural tempatureol r.M degrees Fahrenheit. This boils egg in three minutes and beans in live hours. Tlie next hottest natural water known is that of Sprudol Springs, Carlsbad. KM degrees. At Hot Springs. Arkansas, the maximum temperature oi mo water is izo degrees. Thus, in this, as well as other respects, tho Pacific Northwest ranks the world. G. W. Tape. Manager. Wo expected a tie or a victory, but lost 10-0. The field was wet and slick, and beef overcame any advantage that science could afford. The trip was a very pleasant one. There were 42 students, parents ami friends, in addition to the team, who sailed on the Argosy. The par ty returned at !) p. m. with dampened shoes but the same old spirit. Among tlie parents ami older escorts were Mrs. Kes- ing, Mrs. West, Mr. White and Mrs. Monahan. Miss Clinton and Principal Fry also accompa nied them. The latter returned on the train in order to tako nu t in the program at the open. mg of the new library. The second number or the Ly ceum Course was given Tuesday evening to a largo house. It proved to be equally as good as the Uommonweaiiii uunriei. Mr. Stel.l, in Ids violin work, espe cially pleased the audience, wno encored him time and again. Thus far the Course has been very successful, and the only re gret seems to be that the next number is so lar distant. A Novel Attraction Among the interesting amuse ment concessions to lie presented on the "Midway" at the Panama Pacific Exposition will be "Toy land Grown Up," a walled city in which the buildings will be enlarged reproductions of child ren's toys. The concession will be presented by Frederick ThomiHion, the famous creator of Luna Park at Coney Island. Toyland Grown-Up will be almost an exposition in itself, covering twelve acres, costing more than $1,000,000. It will require more than '1,000,000 feet of lumber and its streets ami canals if stretch ed in a row would be five miles long. Tho walled city will be entered by three mammoth gates: the first gate will 1k the Gate of Fun; the second gate will be the Gate of Fairyland, the gate of beauty; the third gate is the en trance to the City of the Wicked King, where is held captive the doll princess; this is the Gate of Thrills. Among other features of Toyland will be Mother Hub bard's Cupboard, sixty feet high: the Great Shoe, as large as a six story city building, and built, in part, in the form of a aide wheel steamer, since it will have huge wheels by means of which the sightseer will be raised aloft. In Toyland, too, there will be tho City of Peter Pan. the town that never grew up. The Republic of Honduras la the first of the foreign nations to erect its buildings at the Ex- 1 position. Thus far twenlv-nine foreign nowors have announced to the Department of State their intention to partieiimte in the exposition. The Honduras pavi lion is now under roof and the stucco covoring is nearly all in place.
