THE FAR NORTH Continued from first pane. llsnvson dock about 7 l). day. The river Is much deeper than whore we were yesterday, honce we are moving much more rapidly. All will bo anxious to find if there is a boat at Dawson for Fairbanks. It is costly to wait for a boat in this part of the country. I went to a restau rant and got three ham sand wiches for a sick woman and found they cost 50 cents. Yet whon one realizes the distance food is brought, it is at onco evident that people must have a high price for it. 3:15 p. m. The boat just landed to take on board a wo man. There was no wharf, so the crew placed a long plank from the boat to shore. This woman lias been cooking for U5 men in a wood camn for two years at $1!10 a month. She is now going to the White Pass roadhouse an inn, a sort of transient hotel in the Shus banna district at $50 per month. Wo have passed several large rafts of wood this afternoon. Several men on each raft. A man at each end of the raft holds a long sweep in order to guide the raft. The wood is in (i foot lengths, to bo sawed up at Daw son. Friday, II p. m. We have spent the day in Dawson; it is (Uite frontier in appearance with a great many log houses with cement between the logs. There are very good business houses Iticos Buem very liign comparo( with Uregon. Wages, too, are high. Such laborers as whee ing. grading and working will wood is $7 per day. If you eat a meal at all at a restaurant it is 50conts. However, it only costn the Kline to eat three times as much. Mi's. Pulton, the boys and I wont to a restaurant today and gave orders for three. The four of us could not begin to take care of it all. Vegetables and lruiu are very high. Small poaches are three for 25 conta: apples the same price; bananas, 75 cents a dozen; grapes $2 a basket. Lodging in hotels is as cheap as Seattle or Portland. The single men who get $7 per day thus havo the following expense a day tor board: threo meals, si.nu; room 50 cents; total $2. Thus common laborers net $5 n day. Wo are just in time to get the last boat for Fairbanks. The last boat of this season is to Icavo tomorrow at 11 a. m. Our Hat faro from Portland to Fair hanks is$M1.IO. This does not count board and lodging at trans for points, nor transfer of bag gago at stations, It cost S1 to havo my baggage transferred a littlo over 100 feet hero in Dawson, Tluro would only be hunters and fishermen here if' it were not for the gold in the earth and roukx. It is plainly evident that men will face untold hardnhips lor gold. Hundreds of caribou are being killed mid brouir it into town. Orouso, wild chickens, duckH and ptarmigans are Hooding the market. Your loving brother, J. ,1. PA'ITON. PROPOSALS FOR IMPROVEMENT BONDS City of St. Johns, Ore. Wa are equipped j to turn out ueat and tasty printing j promptly at Portland prloea or lut, I A month ago closed our eighth year of business in St. Johns. The success we may have attained has come because we have at all times given you value for your money. Stores have come and gone: we have maintained the policy of treating our patrons as we should expect to be treated were the circumstances reversed, and we are still here and increasing our sales in most of our lines from month to month. We could not do this if we did not give you your money's worth al ways and adjust with a keen sense of right any difficulties that come. The time has gone forever now when it is necessary for you to send from your community to have your needs supplied. Our profits are not spent in extravagant buying but go back into the stock to increase our service in the community and to pay our employes whom we also expect and who do spend their salaries in St. Johns. Spending your earnings out of town whether going to Portland or some where else injures your own home, your community' your patriotism. In the stock of our stores you will find everything to wear and many things to use in your home aside from as large and well sorted a grocery stock as you can find in cities twice the size of St. Johns.
