EDMONDSON CO. 203IS. Jersey Street Attorney Geo. T. Wilson Delivers Stirring Address Enthusiasm Marks First Stockholders' Meeting Equal Rights Company New St. Johns Enterprise Makes Auspicious Start St. Johns has become the homo of 0110 more enterpisint? con corn, thin time in the nature of a co-operative mercantile compa ny. The new enterprise is known as the Equal Rights Com pany, and marks an epoch in the co-opurativo. industrial world, bo ing the first company to incor porate under the now famous IJonville 9!)-Year System Bylaws. Among the stockholders of the Equal Rights Company are a large number of St. Johns' most nroirrossive citizens, including merchants, bankers, business, men and industrial workers. The first stockholders' meeting was hold in the Woodman Nail Saturday. March 8th, and was romnrkablo for the large and en thusiastic attendance, and the Hiiirit of unity that prevailed throughout the evening. The company was called to order by its attorney, J. 0. Stearns, Jr., who presided throughout the evening on behalf of Alvin I'or tor, the temporary chairman. Mr. Stearns opened the meet ing with a few impropriate and well timed remarks touching up on the splendid principle under lying the Hylaws of the organi zation; the excellent work of Mr. Porter in securing so many live, uptodate stockholders; the those blessings which are intend ed for all." The speaker's re marks were well receiver and heartily approved. After this part of the program was over, MODCRNMCTnODS IN J. 0. Stearns, Jr. all pervading spirit of progress tuat is making bl. .John an in dustrial center of a largo torn lory, and cloned by introducing Air. uoo. T. Wilson, the young rortlaud attorney hiki noted speaker. Mr. Wilson i el verei an impromptu address ujion the growing sentiment in favor of industrial cn-nnemtion, and the importance of maintaining a spirit of unity and fairness in all undertakings having for then object a common welfare. Ho said in part: "The benefits to be derived from an orgauixation of this kind are many. Under the co operative system like this you gentlemen as stockholders will alio be the ones to share in the profits which formerly went else where. A co-oiwratlvo enter prise such as this conducted on an extensive scale means a re duction in the cost of produc tion of the necessities of life. Every such reduction which this company may accomplish by rea son of its large scope of opera tion and careful management is not only a saving to the imme diate members and xtockholders of the organisation, but a tre mendous benefit to those whom the priviloge of dealing with your store may come; and it is no idle prophecy on my wrt when 1 say that within a very few years this privilege will be extended to every one. not alone in St. Johns or Portland, but throughout the country and else where. "But in praturtien to the ben efits and advantages which you stockholders will enjoy as mem bers of this pioneer organization thore must be a correuixtnding sacrifice on your part. It is not intended that any one of you shall have complete and unre strained control of this business aa of your own; no one of you shall enjoy all the benefits de rived by this grout onternrise. At times each of you will side with the minority and think that tno judgment or the major tv stockholders erroneous, but the decision ot the majority must ever provail. "Indeed, tlioso facts are true in a largo sonse in any organisa tion or government in which tho people rule. When a man consents to become a member of such a society or government, ho must surrender certain of his rights and libortios and suhordi nato his dasiros to those of ids fellow men in order that no one may bo doprivod of onjoylng Geo. F. Wilson Mr. Stearns called for the nom ination of directors the Hylaws of the organization requiring seven. The following men, all of whom are well known to the eoplo of St. Johns, were placed in nomination and unanimously lected to the board of directors: N. J. Halley, Alvin Porter, Jeorge Wallace, William Wallace. I. Schmauder. 0. Chowning. and W.I I. King. Mr. R. 0. Hachman was elect d auditor to serve for tho term of one year. The board of di rectors then elected the follow ing ofllcers to servo tho company for the initial year: 0. Chown ing, President: William Wallace, Vice Pres.. R. 0. Hachman, Sec retary, aim N. J. Railey, Treas. Mr. Stearns and Mr. Wilson were so well pleased with St. Johns and the hospitality of its citizens that they decided toonon u mat cu law otiico in ot. .loluui to be oneii evenings from (5:;il) p, in. until u:u(J p. m. o'clock. "You certainly haven loto up and coming people here in St Johns," said Altornoy Stearns when interviewed. "While Mi i uti wiiRon and myseii are not as sociated in the law practice in Portland, wo became so favorably impressed with the possibilities of your city that we decided to establish a night ofllce in St. Johns, an idea that is somewhat new in the west but which lias long boon established in theltiurc eastern cities, bt. Johns is pri inarily an industrial center, am we nonove mat more are many people here who. while occasion ally requiring legal advice, can not take tno time to consult an ittorney without great inconven ience, and it is our purpose to servo mem as nest wo can. Mr. Wilson, who is a sturdy advocate f industrial rights and an ac- omplished speaker, h oquall) as nthusiastic as myself over tho future possibilities of the Penin sula, and may improve tho op lorlunity to deliver a sorios of ect tiros hero on economic (lues (ions as soon us we become es tablished." It is rumored that a now com puny, to be capitalised at S7R00O and to operate under tho Honvillo SHMonr bystem. will soon boa 'utility and established fact in St. Johns. The nature of tho now enterprise will not bo announced at this time, but rumor again lias it that the manufacture of breakfast foods is tho purpose in view.- Contributed.
