Oregon county school super intendents in convention at Sa lem last week took steps to en courage tho country hfo move ment among tho school children of tho state. They asked that tho State Fair bo held luter in September to give more time for preparing school exhibits. It was also decided to foster poul try raising and several superin tendents will try to get every pupil in their counties to raise not less than thirty chickens or ducks. Dates have been fixed for the nnnual convention of the Ameri can Association of N rserymen in Portland next June 18, 19 and 20. As this is tho week follow ing tho Rose Festival, an effort will be made to have tho visitors come early in order to attend the flower fete. It is expected that from 4C0 to 500 Eastern members of the association will attend. The Pacific Coast Association of Nurserymen meets there at the same time, convening one day earlier to transact business of the organization. Arthur Duncan of the St. Johns shipbuilding plant, met with a perilous experience while at work on tho slips Monday. His feet slid on tho icy planking and ho wns prccipitatacd into the water below. No help was at hand, and tho water was almost paralyzing in its coolness. Af ter supreme exertion he finally managed to extricate himself from his dangerous and most un eamfortablo position. It was a closo call. An organization to be known as the Married Folks' Social club is being formed in St. Johns. A number of tho leading citizens have become interested in it. Its punose is to devoto an ovening of each week to dancing or card playing. An initial meeting was held last week in Bickner hall, at which a dance was held. A permanent organization will be perfected at tho same hall this evening, per invitations issued. Probably a stampede to Hymen's altar may thus be precipitated, but this is not tho purpose of the club. Lee Cormany and Ross Walker have leased the skating rink for a period of one year. They will give dances every Saturday even ing, beginning with tomorrow evening.
