THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW Commercial Club Meet ORDINANCE NO. 516 ORDINANCE NO. 515 BY A. W. MARKLE I t Published Bvory Friday At 117 West Burlington Street. Subscription prle $1.00 ptr yar. Noxt Thursday is Thanksgiv intr dnv. and once airain our The St. Johns Commercial club held a most enjoyable meeting in their enlarged and attractive club rooms Wednesday evening1, which terminated in a banquet and speechmaking. The banquet was served in admirable stylo by Mrs. Miller and a corps of able assistants, and the banquet table presented a most pleasing appearance, temptingly adorned with most inviting viands in SURE STEP thouchts run to turkey, cranber- abundance. . Plates... for fifty t ... rv sauce, n urn nuciuimr una stomach ache. All those things come with the old fashioned Thanksgiving. Uut more arc other thoughts that should be with us. Thanksgiving is a good deal of a fiasco usually. Wc go to church, if we are in clined. and hear our nnstor on doavor to reach oratorical heights befitting the occasion; or we slay at homo and sleep late, and then go down into the cellar or out in the yard and clean around a bit. Then we eat too much dinner. and have a grouch for tho re mainder of the week, possibly. All of which is a sad commont- tniiiars worn lnifl. Thr mnntintr was for tho club members and their male friends, and was thoroughly enjoyed. After the banquet had been successfully disposed of, the regular monthly budget of business was taken up. The matter of free mail de livery was brought up. and a UV sire for more light upon tho sub ject expressed. A. W. Markle was appointed a committee of one to interview the postal au thoritics at Portland and ascer tain just what sub-station free mail delivery consists of in St. Jonhs case. Complaint was made that the ferry has a poorly nrv linnn niirnivi'liwilinn nnd nur annrcciated habit of stopping ntliicH. Of course in those davs operations frequently lor the of more or less prosperity, there are really but few of us who have any legitimate cause to be thankful to an unusual ex tent. Yet wo ought to do some thing on Thanksgiving day that will make us really happy, and that will obliterate the feeling of fullness following the annual food fest. What can wo do? This is just a suggestion, but wo make it: Why not antedate Christmas somewhat and dig down in our jcaiiH for some coin to make some poor fellow just a little bit glad that he is alive? Why not go down to tho market and got a turkey and some spuds and some cranberries and some mince pic, and send tho same to tho Widow Smith.or to Finnorty. who got his leg broken or who is too ill to work? God knows that Thanksgiving will bo a travesty for thorn If some such miracle haiiDenetli not. Hut if we lend a helping hand wo will be doing that which will brighten the day for them, and that which will make them truly devout when thuv say their prayers at night fall and give thanks unto llini who Is supposed to watch over all. And then, you know, doing nurnosc of cleaning the boilers, and that the public was not given any warning or when tho clean ing up process might take place. It generally takes a day, or at least a day is used for this pur pose. K. 0. Couch suggested that this work be done on bunday mornings and that cards or cir- ulars be distributed notifying the public of that fact. E. L. bmith and A. Larrowe wore ap pointed as a committee to join with the city council in bringing the matter before tho county commissioners in an endeavor to have the difficulty and annoyance to the traveling public arranged in a more satisfactory manner. James J. Sayer, a member of I the Portland Commercial club and field secretary of the Oregon Development League, made a few interesting remarks concerning tho development of Oregon, and the need of a greater population. I'jugeuo Mrookings, a promi nent Portland attorney, made an entertaining address. Ho told of the great need of more manu facturing plants, stating that St. Johns was destined to become the great manufacturing and industrial center of Portland; On the road to success is the starting of Savings Account at this bank. Why not begin today? The man who neglects to save while he has earning capacity will some day be "down and out - lost among the thous ands who arc just barely ex isting. What are you going to do? Why not start a Savings Ac count here today? A dollar is all you need your money will draw 4 per cent, interest, too. There is a strange kink in human nature that makes prove of inestimable value to ward Hint end, and that we should bend our energies toward securing more factories, He thought it a good plan to meet us all happy when wo contribute with tho various civic organiza- to the happiness or some one else. When wo merely make ourselves happy tho thing falls flat, and there is an aftermath of disgust. Try it this year and see. Make it your business to make somebody else's Thanks giving a real festival, and then sou if you do not fool better; and r 1 !.. in ..... I... Johns in every way pos sible. The meeting was a decided sua cess in every way and thorough ly enjoyed, Supposing tho St. Water Works were purchased by tho city for SlfiO.OOO. Supposing 50-year bonds drawing fivo per cent in terest wore issued in payment thereof, which intercut would amount to $7,500 per year Supposing the city of St. Johns una muuii paying hi uic waiui company &1.G00 per year for city fire hydrants and sower flushing. Supposing by the city taking over tho plant a saving of $1000 nor year in tho way of rout, fuel. light and clerk hire could bo QtVootod over what it is costing tho water company. And suppos ing tho city ot fortiand should consolidate with St. Johns be fore fifty years have expired and assumed our indohtcdncos, what would tho city of St.Jolum really bo paying for the water works? And in case of consolidation would it bo n dill limit matter to connect the pipes of tho local wa tor water works with tho main lino of tho Hull Hun system, if tho local water become contami nated, as ono party ulleeU to bo iievo might ho the case; , The least said about the Port land scandal that has recently boon unearthed tho hotter. The deeper ono delves into the mess tho nioro nauseous it becomes, fin i ' i noro is oniy one uaiiy paper in Portland that attempts to com mercializo scandal, and it is too filthy for any self respecting pa per to iiuiinge in ueiaus. .
