THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW

Tlmt St. Johns "do grow' none
onn deny. The fnct that 133 more
tmtills enrolled this year tlmtt Inst
in the tml)lic schools is convincing
evidence thtil this must be true It
must nlso be n nd fspu tlle evidence
tlmt St. Johns is rapidly approach
inn. if it lms not already icachcd,
the 6.000 mnrk. Other evidences
tire nn hicreahed and insistent de
mnnd for vncnnt houses, which is
keeping the realty men on the jump
to supply. Verily bt. Jolins is on

It Is said tlmt the Ilurriinnn peo
ple have been hiveiitiiratiiiir the
water front here rnther minutely of
lnte with a view of csttilJlishhiK
Inrc docks for hnndlitiK their Snn
lfrnncisco steamship business. We
might suggest that they give the
St. Johns dock some consideration,
and if they bid high enough it is
possible that they may have it even
if it is necessary to change the
charter to make sole. The hope
will go with it that they make bet
ter use of it thnn St. Johns has
been able to do.
It would be a wise move and 11
most commendable one on the part
of some individuals owning broad
acres oi virgin laud along the water
front if they would donate a little
of it for free factory sites. The en
hancement of value of the remain
ing portion would more than offset
the value of the donation. Much
more than that, the city would be
greatly benefited thereby. It re
quires neither a sage nor a philan
thropist to foresee that such a move
is not devoid of merit, neither does
it come under the head of charity.
It is a business" proposition pure
and .simple .iuwhich the donor can
figure himself out ahead in what
ever light he views it. Isn't it
better to go down in history ns a
public benefactor and possibly have
11 street or two named after you
than to be remembered ns 11 clog in
the wheels of progress by keeping
what you do not need or holding it
at a price at which none can buy?
We can submit the proposition
with the utmost good grace be
cause unfortunately we own no
river frontnge. Hut we are willing
and ready to advertise the fact
no unstinted manner when some
individual nuiinuuces to us that he
lias some laud that he will donate
frculy for factory purposes, Don'
