The many friends of Mrs. Lester will wish the happy pair the best that life affords. Jack Brooks went up to Eugeue to visit friends and incidentally to recover some of his lost huskiness. He has been under the weather for several weeks and was geting no better fast. We trust he will sooa return looking like a gladiator. Miss Ruth Crouch has gone to Forest Grove, where she will teach during the school year. Her many friends will be glad of this, for it will meau that Miss Ruth will be with them many times during the year, which would have been im possible at her other location. Miss Jeanette Ogden came up from Dayton last Saturday aud cap tured the first prize as pianist at the Portland Institute of Musical Art- The prize consists of a half scholarship at the Institute. Miss Qgden's many friends here are pleased to learn of her skill iu the musical line. r It had been reported that a can ning company bad secured posses sion of a portion of the Star Sand Co. land at the foot of Richmond street and would at once erect a a plant. Upon inquiry at the cen tral office of the Star Sand Co., however, the officials denied bay ing any knowledge of the project. A large number of special trains will run to Pendleton from Portland to carry the thousands who will at tend the Round-Up, September 26 28. Other sections of the Pacific Northwest will send big delegations and Puget Sound will be well rep resented. Mr. Paltou aud his good wife have made many friends here during the past year who sincerely hope he may be returned for another year with us. Miss Edna Rowan, Nutional Sec- rstary Loyal Temperance Legion of of the National W. C. T. U., will speak at the Adventist church next Saturday morniug.Sept. 21st, at 11 o'clock. Another death from drowning iu the Willamette river opposite St. Johns took place about 10 o'clock Wednesday evening. Prank Kel soy and Harold McMamis were crossing the river iu a rowboat to Whit wood Court. Mr. Kelsey stood upright for some purpose or oilier, ami losing Ills balance fell overboard, overturning the boat ut the same time, Kelsey could not swim and soon sank to the bottom. McMamis managed to reach the Whitwood side of the river iu an cxmiusiea condition, ami was placed iu bed at one of the hotels. St. Johns Pull Club The St. Johns Pull club held u mass mectiug iu the city hall Wed nesduy evening to promote the iui uauve ami reiercmium measure providing for the consolidation of contiguous incorporated cities. The club is of recent birth of which A. W. Davis Is president; S. C. Cook, vice president, and W. A. Carroll, secretary. Its avowed purpose is to pull for anything that might be considered an aid to the growth and prosperity 01 &t. Johns. it was dce'med advisable to pull for Ballot litle No. 34H, the consolidation measure, because sooner or later St. Johns will undoubtedly desire to become a part of Portland, which is impossible under existing laws or the lack of them. A number of citizens were present and an impe tus given toward the end aimed at, While tne sentiment for consolida tion is not nearly so strong now as it once was, it seems to be the pur pose to promote the bill so that it may be used as a sort of a club when things do not go right in St. Johns. We understand that the' Portland library-association has decided to accept the Holbrook plot of ground on hast Charleston street for the site of a public library. We also learn that the structure will not cast less than $20,000, aud that construction will begin within the next six weeks. This will mean quite an addition to St. Johns. The First National Bank is un dergoing some extensive improve ments aud alterations, The whole front is being rearranged iu order to afford more light aud more room. Also another window is being add ed to the cashier's department. 0 Miss Hazel Couch left Tuesday morning for Gravel Pord, Coos county, where she will teach music in the schools. Council Proceedings OWing to the fact that the mayor aud president of the council, mid also Alderman Valentine and Re colder Rice were called to Salem Tuesday 011 business that detained them until a late hour, council ses sion Tuesday evening was adjourn ed until last evening, when witli the exception of Aldermen Wilcox who is ill and Hill who is 011 a fish ing jaunt 011 the Nehalem nil mem bers were present. Betchcl Bros, asked for Co days' extension of time 011 the Burlington street improvement, but as the bondsmen's consent did not accom pany the petition it was lefurred back so that the omission may be be supplied. A communication from the Com mercial club recommended that the streets near the ferry lauding be placed in good condition. Council had already taken this matter up, but the communication was refer red to the chairman of the street committee, A time and manner ordinance providing for the improvement of Plllmore street between Richmond and John passed second reading, aud 011 objection of Alderman Hit ler who deemed the proposed im provement too incomplete, further action was delayed. On complaint that the Richmond street dock was sadly Iu need of re pairs, 011 motion of Alderman Val entine the street committee wns em powered to make them, J. J. Shores and family, recently from Newberg where tliey had con ducted a large hotel have taken pos session of the New St. Johns hotel 011 Burlington street. Mr. Shores originally came from New York and has had many year exixui- cuce iu the hotel business. He in tends to conduct his latest venture iu a first-class and uptodate manner. Word from Chas. Bailey status that iu company with Wynn Man tling and Willis Moxou and family he is on his way to Crater I.aku and that the date of his return to St. Johns la still indefinite.
