NO. 35 Council Proceedings With the exception of Alderman Pcrrlne, nil members were present at the regular meeting of the council Tuesday evening with Mayor Muck presiding. Mr. Pcrrlne, having overstayed his leave of absence and there being little probability of his early return to St. Johns, Mayor Muck declared the office vacant, and council then proceeded to elect a new council man nt large in Mr. Perrinc's stead. Aid. Davis presented the name of I. 13. Martin with the pica that since the second ward, which Is the smaller of the two, has been having five couucilmcn against two in the first ward it would be no more than proper to take this opportunity of more nearly equalizing the alder manic board. Aid. Hill placed the name of V. I. Stadelman in the running with the assertion that while the second ward was long on Motor Regatta Classy One feature of the motor boat regatta which will be held at St. John during the Elk's reunion will be n sailing boat race. The Port laud Motor Boat club has decided to award a cup to the winner of the race, and it is expected that all the fast yachts on the river, Including the Virginia, Sparrow, Fore au' Aft and Terrier will enter. The Wigwam II, the newest boat, owned by Charles Wise of Astoria, will not be entered In this regatta. Wise shipped his boat cast last week, where It will com , pete against the fastest boats in the United States. Johnny Wolf's latest creation, which has been remodeled lately, will make its first appearance in the free-for-all race at the regatta, and it is expected that the const speed record will be shattered. Oth cr racers that wilt compete in the Sweet Pea Show, Industrial Exhibit and Regatta Monday and Tuesday of next week will be St. Johns' gala days. People from far and near will as scmblc with us on those days to witness the show, the various ex hibits and the regatta on the river. Untiring efforts have been put forth by the Commercial club, Ladles' Auxiliary nud many citizens to make it an occasion long to be re membcrcd. It will be the first time that St. Johns ever had an oppor tunity to witness a regatta at its very front door, but it will not likely be the last. More strangers will undoubtedly be in St. Johns next week than has ever before been the case. That it will be pro ductive of great and lastiug good to the city cannot be doubted. Our wonderful resources and natural ad vantages arc so little known to the outside world that when the guests come they will be amazed and filled with wonder that so favored a lo cality can be found so close to the great cily of Portland. The expo sition of Portland was the begin ning of greater Portland. So may the sweet pea show during the Elks' week prove the beginning ot great er things for St. Johns. The city was most fortunate in securing the card of immense attraction. It is up to our citizens, nud espe cially to the business men, to deco rate their business places and as many residences as possible. It will be a time to don holiday attire, and greet our guest with a clean, and well appearing city. Tell them of the good things we have, of our possibilities, and impress upon them the desirability of locating here. The city dock Is being placed in flue condition for the displays, anil the streets are being finely decorat ed. The sweet pea exhibits give rich promise of being immense and unusually pretty and attractive, the Elks colors of white and strongly predominating. The scope auu nature ot tlic vnr St. Johns Fete Grows St. Johns is making elaborate pre parations for its Sweet Pea carnival and industrial exhibit July 3 and 9. The city dock, where the exhibit will be held, is bciug wired and guard rails arc being placed along the water wall. The Commercial club has been successful in raising funds for a program on a large scale. The Women's Auxiliary has appointed a committee for beautifying the dock and arranging the display of flowers. The city will be decorated and several bauds will furnish music.
