Ior the first time in its history
the famous battleship Oregon Is to
visit its own state. During the
Klks reunion, in July, the historic
old fighting ship will be brought to
Portland harbor, where it will lie
much admired by nil loyal Oregon
ians. Naval officials have at last
given their consent to the request
that the Oregon be brought here.
Timothy Urownhill has started a
paper at Kenton, under the title of
Peninsula Herald. Timothy is one
of the most versatile men in the
state in the country newspaper
game, nud will no doubt give thnt
rapidly growing section a newspa
per that it may feel proud of.
May advertisements nud subscrip
tions flow into the new sutictiiin in
n constantly increasing stream.
The selection of Roy Wilcox os
Councilman of the Second Ward to
succeed J. 15. Jennings, resigned,
was a good one. Mr. Wilcox pos
sesses numerous friends, has re
sided in St. Johns for a number of
years and is familiar with the city s
needs nnd requirement);. He pos
scsscs an tiie qtinliiicnitoiis 01 a
good councilman, nnd will no doubt
prove his worth nnd eiliciencv in
his new capacity.

Governor west lias declared war
against unlawful practices nt the
different road places. He has the
pluck to carry out the
the limit. 1 lie toad nouses, ac
cording to complaints, have become
breeding houses for nil manner of
crime. The Governor will likely
give the county olhccrs some sali
cut pointers before he gets through
with his campaign, h. i. J. Me
Allister claims degeneracy is bred
in isolated districts. He might have
included road houses to gowl ad
vantage, even if goods roads do lead
right to the door.
It may be that the Ameiicaii
eople will some day realize what 11
gigantic farce the delegate system
of nominating presidents is getting
to he. The nmiir at Chicago last
week gave good illtistruion of what
can be expected from this system.
The great majority of Republicans
favored the nomination of Roose
velt, yet he had no nIiow of nomi
nation. It is time that the dele
gate system be abolished, nud nomi
nations be made direct by the peo
ple. The popular vote should Ik
accorded uie nomination in every
instance. Pcrhai the day will
come when it will be so, CMecially
after a few moie lurlcwiic like the
Chicago convention.
1
One could not hell) but wonder,
ns he viewed the beautiful battle
ship, Maryland, recently lying in
the Portland harbor, nud costing 11
million or more dollars, why in this
enlightened nge it was necessary to
const! net such engines of war, and
maintain in idleness and tiselemiucss
thousands of marines. Hut millions
upon millions of dollars are spent
every year in army nnd navy, nnd
to what puriKisc? Simply tointliu
idate any other nation from nt'
lempuug 10 ueuu on inicie Mini s
toes, This would be nil right pro
vuied 11 is necessary, nut in litis cu
lightened day and age, war is tin-
necessary absolutely. We believe
it possible to form an alliance be
tweeu all nations whereby nnv in
ternational troubles may be satis
factorily settled bv arbitration.
Surely it is time that wars should
cease, and no country be permitted,
Dy international agreement, to main
tain either navies or standing
nrmias.

The Gas Kitchen
Means the Cool Modern Kitchen
1
The modern home would be as complete without
water and sewer connections as it would be without
a gas range and a gas water heater.
With the Gas Kitchen you have banished the coal,
wood, dirt, dust, aslies, kindling and heat.
While notwo womcti may agree on tuiy other subject, yet of the thousands that
arc using gas ranges, all are agreed that they arc the most convenient and durable
economical and perfect cooking and baking appliances they ever saw or used.
Our 191a ranges arc now ready for delivery.
Just as wc promise they represent the combined features of quality and conven
ience. Wc can meet the requirements of-any kitchen regardless of size. Wc sell gas
ranges and gas water heaters on installmeuts at cost connections free.
Wc invite you to call and look over our proposition for yourself.
