Wc feel like apologizing to our rondeis this week for using ho much space in discussing the various plmscs of the annexation question. Hut while it has KUtn to be n rttther tiresome topic with ninny, it is something thnt should he given the most serious consideration. Not thnt the ultimate outcome of the ense pending lefore the supreme court can he changed, hut the new conditions mining from annexation, should it take place, must be Iticul. At host it would be n jump in the dnrk. Hut it is not a time of repin ing. Tiie die is cast, ami it is now up to us to consider how it would affect the city at large. Hence the questions, answers nud comments that should prove food for thought. Wc do not harbor the slightest ill toward any who differ from us on this proposition. If they nru hon est in their views, wc admire them for it. We well remember back in Pennsylvania, in Clearfield, where we spent 25 years of our life. There were two incorporated towns, one lorge and the other small, with only n river dividing the two. The an nexation question arose, and prac ally the same nrgumeiits were used then hi favor of annexation as have been advanced in St. Johns: We would have the prestige of the name of a better known town, lower taxes, more iuduatries.hctlcr streets mid better conditions nit around. We lived in the smaller place, nud witli our father were nideut annex tiouisU. We couldn't see it any other light, despite any argument to the contrary. That was more than 15 years ago. The smaller place was a thriving place, Iree from debt and could get anything needed. Annexation took place, taxes roc to almost double, popu lation lagged, no iudUHtricri came, the inoiiivd men took good care that anything good was located in the territory of what was the larger town, only one or street were im proved, which were paid out of the general fund, as is the rule back there, property depreciated in value and not a thing we hojied for did we get. Tine the smaller town was made into a ward witli two couiiciliiieu, hut they were eer up against n "stone wall" witli seven coitiicilniuu always against them; the two could get nothing. The tail simply could not wag the dog. One experience, thetefore, of this kind is plenty for us. Capitalists nud iulluentlal men ever control the situation mid the remote dlstiicts of any city get just what I bene men find it to their h.timiiih1 advantage to Kiiinit them to have, rortlam needs tit, but we don't need Port hind. Anything it has we can use now, even to its name. There is Mutitt complaint that St. Johns douti not get its projiortiou of in dliMrieti nud new residence, yet it must be remembered that Port land iti about 50 times as Urge as this city according to population, and thnt every time St. Johns gets a uuw indiiktry or lesideuce Port laud mind secure fifty to grow pro portionately. In the pHtft six years Poitland bus fallen far Ixdiiud 111 the race. This is a fact that ctiuuol lie (UiHitvl. nnd what more could be exK.cttl from annexation? Under the prov idence of Ood the human intellect struggled to be free from the uar row sphere of the traditioun "scribe." Outtenberg opened the way for this divine privilege.
