To Bore Council Crest. The People's Press of last week says: "If tlic plans of the organizn tion recently formed to bore n tun ucl under Council Crest do not mis carry, Portland will lmve n West Side suburb that will be rivalled only by the East Side." Our bright contemporary need have no very great spasms of fear that the lovely Kast Side is to have n formidable rival on the West Side within a year, or within a century for that matter. It is true tlic monetary lords of the West Side have viewed with more or less uneasiness and teal ousy the rapid strides the Kast Side is ninkintr toward financial and commercial independence, am! when the thoughtof supremacy am control of these departments of our busiticcs world shifting across the river occurs to them, it doubtless causes their hearts to rise in their throats almost to suffocation. The farmers are a thrifty bunch and deserve all that Portland can give tliem. We would like to see them get it nud hope they will, but the trouble is the "tight-wads" of Portland who arc the more di rectly interested and more able to pay will not loosen up on n' shekel until their hands are pried open with a crowbar. This "Hold to the iiitin" policy of some of the wealth iest Westslders has been n good boost for the Kast Side and will continue to be so until all they re tire into "iuocuous desuetude." This "tlghtwaditls," which is so prevalent there will not bar the tun net, for the Tualatin boys arc after it and they are not tightwads. Thr delimits that will militate against the "bore" urc those which killed the San Francisco proposition, viz in order to liud a place where short tunnel of 600 or 700 feet would take them through the ridge will be so near the top that it will he of little practical value to the inrmcrs, and to put llie tunnel on such a level us would eliminate the heavy haul, would cost from three and a half to Ave million bucks and it is 11 (lucstlou if it would not be paying too much lor the whistle. For the southern part of the vu ley it would be n great boon to get n tunnel at a comparatively low level, but for the middle and north eru portions of the valley, with a good road, easy grade, free ferry and 11 better market, the farmers would be going farther and faring worse to seuk patronage from thr congested district of the West Side, already overworked by local pro ducers. We would like to tcc some of the "gotrockH" of the West, Side loos vu uptlieir relentless deatli grasp upon their ducats at least so as to enable them to invvt the Tualatin boys half way; because they de serve it for the enterprise they have shown in taking the initiative. It will do harm to the Ivast Side; for there is nothing short of a cataclasm blotting out that werlew reMideuce, commercial nud inauufiictiiiiug Kile extending from Sellwood to the junction of the two livers, can ever stop the wonderful piogteMi of tliU section; an advancement that U increasing in volume and velocity as the years go by and will in nu incredibly short time make the Kast Side, Portland, nud Portland Til 1C city of the Pacific coast. The locn tiou is ideal lor such 11 destiny, the resource back of Portland is ample to warrant Mich 11 conclusion, nud the development oi these resource is as yet but in its Incipient Mage. All that will be required to bring about the fulfillment of this prophe sy is well directed effort backed by n liberal policy of development. No epidemic of "TiulitwiulUiH" will over accomplish it or anything else pcrhnps except the advancement of one section of the city at the ex pense of some other as indicated ubove.
