Not neccswirily to give your wrath n chance to cool off, but to locate your adversary's vulnerable spot. Now comes n scientist who says that "the wotld will be destroyed by dissipation into invisible corpus cles." That is about what hap pened Teddy on Nov. 8th. The (lowers nte dead, the year is dying; with plaintiveiiesti the wind is sighing. Hut worry not, just cease your crying there s Imcon in the pun iifrying, and it cost .jo cents a Kund, too. More tiuth than ikh: try in that, eh? The lid has fallen over St. Johns and the fight fans of the city of the apostles are sitting in sackcloth and ashes today, wondering how in the world they arc going to pass the time away December 16, when the St. Johns Athletic club had planned to give them some more fistic gaiety in the ring. From some source, ns yet not made public, but believed to have been the Sheriff's office, the tip went out to the promoters of the scraps that the next time anybody pulled n glove on and crawled through the ropes in St. Johns he would become an inmate of "Hob" Stevens' strong box. It is said that the officials even had a hard time preventing themselves from arrest ing the promoters after the last bouts, but it seems as if the crusa ders finally said thev would be snt isfied to let the past go if "nothing doing would be the motto of the club hereafter. It will not only be the motto. It will be the battle cry. When that tip reached St. Johns there was sue! a scurrying among the backers of the game to get out from under that there was hardly anybody left in sight with courage to announce that the bouts were off. lelegram. The above can be taken as a ca untd. The athletic club professes to know nothing about it. No event had been scheduled for Dee 16. The state Inw, we believe, per' mils 15 round glove contests, Un til this law is violated the sheriff can do nothing. And this law has not been broken in St. Johns. Ten rounds with 110 decision has been the limit set by the club, and has iccri strictly adhered to. No, the loxing game is not dead nor has the lid been placed upon it in St. Johns, so the club affirms. FIRST NATIONAL BANK Ulcct Officers. Advertising is like planting. It was so good that now we want all to know it was this: In the absence fioin the city of our beloved president, Mrs. J. C. Scott, a surprise was planned (or her and it was decided to meet at her home and pieseut her with a certificate of life membership in the state W. C. T. U.. together with a euid in Kin which was printed a list of the names of the donors. In honor of the occasion Mrs. Mallet, president of Multnomah county V. C, T.U., who is an able seaker, was invited to be present. Mrs. Mallet first gave us a very interest ing talk on the work that we could do, after which she made a very eloquent presentation speech, and Mrs. Scott, although much affected rusiouded in her usual aide manner, ami let me add, Mis. Scott was not the only one alfected, as tears were shed iu nearly all arts of the room. Miss Lillian Perkins, St. Johns' able elocutionist, favored us with n very appropriate reading. Hie at tendance was large and each lady brought cither fruit, nuts or mot delicious homemade candy. The large variety of fruit with the lem onade which we found awaiting us, formed a most dchirahle luncheon which was served after the program during the social hour. 1'. C.
