The annexation question Is nbottt to reach a climax. l?or the past two mouths much has been said, discussions have arose and the mat ter has been pretty thoroughly threshed over. What the result will be If the matter is voted upon next Tuesday, no man can foretell. Whatever it may be there will like ly be little 111 feeling, and there will be no reason to be. People have n right to their opinion and a right to express It at the polls. Life is too short to harbor rcvctmcfttl thoughts. Wc have fought the fight to the best of our ability, and expressed our convictions as we saw them. Tlmi thov difforcd from views held by others is certain, and It must be so upon any question Hint arises. No broad-minded man could cen sure us for favorinir what we be Hcvcd to be the right. We have ever tried to be fair and refrain from abuse, and believe we have succeeded in this. Whntcver the result, wc shall have no fault to find. If annexation enrrics, we have been a Democrat too long not tn know how to accent defeat urnco fully. We have ninny warm friends among the "anncxers nnu we slmll feel lust ns kitullv toward them after election ns wc have done in the past. They sec the question according to their lights and wc ac cording to ours. To annex or not to annex. That is the question. If you want the 0. K. & N. to get possession of the city dock, vote for annexation. If you want your taxes raised from 30 to 40 per cent, vote for an nexation, and it will be so. Which would sound better: ''St. Johns, a thriving and flourishing little city," or "a suburb of Port laud, Oregon?" Under the corrupt practice act it is n penitentiary offense to bet on the result of an election either as to person or measure. And yet men will wager. Pottage, n street con tractor well known by many citi zens iu St. Johns, shot and instant ly killed Prank A, Porter, an engineer, at Portland Tuesday morning. Pottage made a strong effort to secure the contract for Pes senden street, The prayer service at the Metho dist church brought out many Tues day afternoon, and the well chosen addresses of our pastors were much appreciated and I believe inspired all present with renewed vigor to do their part iu this great temper ance work. An appropriate vocal solo by Mrs. Caicy was much en joyed. Press Cor. Chas llredesou is circulating a petition invoking the aid of the btate Kaihvay Commission in securitiirn freight and iMSsenuer de pot iu St. Johns and a sidetrack to connect witti tlie city dock. Also requesting their influence in com pelling all river boats to stop at the city dock. All ate praiseworthy features and if they can be material ized will be great boons for St. Johns. The petition is being numerously signed, only one ob structionist refusing todo so. Here's hoping, Charley, that you get all you are asking for. If you do the people should rise up and call you ''blessed." Subscribe for the Review and be Pleasantly Surprised The members of the St. Johns Bachelor club were very pleasantly surprised last Tuesday evening by about twenty ot tneir uacncior girl" friends, who under the chap- eronagc of Mr. and Mrs. J. 1'. Gil more, Mr. and Mrs. (Jail i'crrinc, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Glover, presented themselves at the club meeting heavily laden with good thincs to eat, and suggested that business be suspended for the even- The ladies were masked and dressed In Hallowe'en costume, all of the same style, and the Bache lors were made to select tneir part ners for supper before the masks were removed. This occasioned a great deal of amusement on account of the inability of the Bachelors to make any discrimination between the ladies. After the selection of partners, tables were spread and the next half hour was spent In feasting. The rooms were then cleared of tables and through the kindness of Mr. Glover, a piano was secured from the adjoining hall, and the rest of the evening was spent In dancing, singing and music. The K. of P. fair which began Wednesday evening is proving n howling success. The rink was filled almost to the limit to listen to and enjoy the splendid music fur nished by the Mnle Chorus of the Grace M. 15. Church, Portland. All were more than delighted with the entertainment provided. The choir can well feel proud of their achieve incut here, and it is hoped that soon again the people of St. Johns may have the keen pleasure of hearing them in this city. Besides being fine musicians the Male Chorus is certainty a lively and jolly "bunch." Tonight (Thursday) the evening will begiven over to vaudc ville stunts by local artists, and bar rels of fun are promised. A. M.
