St. Jolms Is trying to get nwoy from home rule. I tinny world. 1 I, Many there ore who deplore the fact that the new city dock was ever built, claiming It was n mon umcntal blitudcr. Yet tlicse same people would not be willing to sell the dock as it stands for three times what it cost the city three years ago. Is it a blunder to purchase something that increases 111 value 200 per cent in three years? If it is, wc would like to have n few of the same kind of blunders to our credit. While it was n mistake not to have provided for sidetracks when the dock was constructed, yet ns it stands the dock was a splendid investment, and any time the peo ple are willing sidetracks can yet be provided. , , , Why the Review should be ecu stircd for upholding home rule, or iti other words, favoring staying out of Portland, is more than wc can understand. Has the paper not the same privilege of standing up for what it believes to be right and the proper course to take on the annexation question tisnny citi zen in St. Johns l We surely have a right to express our opinion, and wc have freely offered space to any one dillcrlng with us, even chal lenged them to take up the issue with us and discuss it in n sane manner. Because none have so far taken advantage of this oppor tunity is no reason why wc should keep silent. There are men in St. Johns who refuse to listen to rea son 011 any subject, and these arc the sort that get "sore" at n news paper when it takes cither one side or the other. When the liquor question came up we refrained from taking cither one side or the other editorially and offered either side an opportunity to express their views. Yet two crsoits got so "sore" that they stopped their paper because wc did not take up the "dry" side of the argument. In that instance wc had nothing particular at stake. As to annexa tion we have, and any one with red blood in his veins would fight to a finish if the situation involved as much to them, So far one man. a rabid nnnexer, has stopped his paper because, presumably, we can not see me question in tue same light as himself. Whether he wil refuse to do business with iner chants of St. Johns because they do not look at the matter in the same light as himself is hard to tell, but it would be consistent for him to do so. We have nothing to say about tlic man, but wc do re gard the act as a most despicable otic, as tar as losing the subscrip tion is concerned, it is like putting a linger in a bucket of water, pull itig it out and then looking for the hole. Oiihe whole, we arc glad to nave mcu with such narrow, con traded views removed from the list. So if there arc any more in 01.. j onus who want to suppress free speech, who are opposed to reading anything in the way of argument against their belief, who believe n newspaper has not the same right to argue the matter as the man on the street comer, who is the enemy of all who cannot sec the issue in the same light as him self, who has such n narrow cramncd. little soul that he is an posed to reasonable argument, wc invite I j i tn to come to the office and stop his rmncr. Wc will nublish his name in the paper so the whole community may know what a brave Hero ( ) lie really is. Wc intend to keep liainnicrinir nwav until election, and then if the majority is in favor of annexation wc shall have no fault to find. In any event, wc expect to still do busi ucss nt the same old stand. If the newspaper business is unprofitable in the event of nuiicxatlon, wc shall still conduct a job printing business until the time comes when a newspaper will be enabled to keep alive in St. Johns. Wc have noth ing but the kindliest feeling toward all that differ with us 011 the annex ation question. It is their right, and a man may be a matt for nil that. The blowing up with dynamite of the Los Angeles paer was n most deplorable affair. That there tire such fiends in the world is nl most inconceivable. The printers are not to blame for what appears in a ucwspater. They obey the commands of the editor-in-chief, and what nppcars in the paper or what docs not oppcar is absolutely nothing tp them. And yet, these arc the oircs that had to suiter In this damnable outrage. The party responsible for the utterances es caped and the protwrty was in sured to the full limit. The busi ness of the newspaper will be in creased instead of diminished by the act. What, therefore, was gained ? Widows and orphans are left to suffer. It is not believable Why-did tit she have her mtwamQ& m the it Paul Cochran Injured Carelessness Is the reason why many people do not put their valuables Jewels, heirlooms, notes, deeds, wills Into our safety deposit vaults. Are you careless? Our vaults are absolutely safe against fire and burglars and it will cost you but little to rent a box In our safety deposit vaults for a whole year. Then you can sleep well or leave home know ing you arc safe against flro and burgl&rs. FIRST NATIONAL BANK We clip the following from yes terday's Oregonian concerning Paul Cochran, son of Thos. Cochran of this city, who had his collar bone broken while practicing with a foot ball squad: Paul Cochran, right tackle and captain of the Lincoln High School foot ball team, broke his collar bone while practicing with his squad yesterday on the West Iiud grounds, near the City Park. The accident will keep him out of the game for the rest of the season. He was engaged in scrimmage work against the second team when he was bumped hard, receiving the fracture. Dr. Herbert W. Hegele was summoned immediately. The young man was removed to his home, 502 Richmond street, St. Johns, in the doctor's automobile. The fracture was almost in the same spot in which one was re ceived two years ago. The player will not be confined to his bed but will lose the use of his arm for sev eral weeks. The lass of Captain Cochrau this year means much, for he was re garded as the mainstay of the team. Dig, strong, a heady and fearless player, he was the terror of the op ponents' offense last year, and in the game against Jefferson High school last baturday he did more tackling than any man oti cither team. He was all-star tackle last year. DON'T PAY RENT Wc have homes In nil parts of the city that can be bought like paying rent and the prices are right. Come in and let us tell you about them.
