SINGS ITS DEATH SONG.
V Peculiar Bird Found In the Junglee
of 8outh America.
There is a queer bird In the jungles
of northern South America which Is
called tho "pnujl" by the natives, but
Is known to science ns the galeated
cunisson. It Is chiefly remarkable be
cause It sings Its owu death song.
It docs not really slhg, but makes a
deep humming noise which sounds
very much like the Spanish words "HI
nnicrto cstn aqul" (the corpse lies here).
"It Is whllo uttering this lugubrious
chant," said a South American travel
er, "that the paujl usually meets Its
denth, for tho hunter can then easily
track It to Its retreat, and It falls a
victim, as tho Indians Bay, to its own
death song."
If tho paujl gets suspicious It Im
mediately ceases humming, and that Is
a sure Indication to tho hunter that
tho bird has seen him or scents dan
ger. In such n caso tho only thing for
tho sportsman to do Is to remain per
fectly still. Tho bird may becotno re
assured after waiting nwhilo and again
begin to call, "Tho corpse lies hero." It
can then bo cautiously approached and
killed.
If It Is only wounded tho paujl usu
ally escapes, though It cannot fly much
better than tho ordinary domestic
fowl. It is very fleet of foot nnd will
outrun tho hunter until It Is lost In tho
denso undergrowth of tho Jungle.
In tho tnntlng season tho malo paujl
Is tho most pugnacious of birds and
will light Its own kind whenever It
meets them. Often tho fight ends In
tho annihilation of both combatants.

his passion. (Jrnsso let the weaou slip

An Indignant member of tho audi

where It was dexterously caught by

Then, with n swift bound, Orasso

Tho next mluuto he had climbed back
to tho boards, with tho victim In his
arms.
After settling him In a chair Grasso
threw himself on his knees and began
a long entreaty for forgiveness. This
was rapidly granted by tho much cm
hurrusHcd playgoer, who on his side
beggisJ to be allowed to return to his

Hut this was not to be until (Irasso,
weeping copiously, Had liestowcd no
fewer than llfly resounding kisses on
tho man's blushing cheeks.
The action was grilled with loud

resumed and successfully concluded.
