ANNOUNCEMENT I wish to annotmcc to the rcptlb licati voters of Multnomah county that I am a candidate for re-election to the legislature front this district, subject to the choice of the voters at the primary election to be held September 24. into. I am a firm believer in 'the direct primary law, statement No. 1 and let the people rule." K. C. COUCH. There is no reason for one to get "sore" over the annexation titles Hon. Kvery one lias u right to his opinion, aud a right to express it. if it docs not coincide witli your own ideas it is 110 reason to feci in dignaut. All men cannot think alike: it is not human nature. Most men arc open to conviction, and if they can be shown a certain meas ure would be detrimental to the city, would oppose it. Argument nud facts have the most weight. Hut it is poor policy to become angry, because arguments then lose their effect. - Council proved Tuesday night that we can get anything we want in the way of better streets if the property owners will stand for it. lletwecn &0.000 and S60.000 of street improvement was inaugurated with more to follow next week. Read the council proceedings and sec what they did aud then ask yourself if the Portland city council after annexation would likely do so much for St Johns at one session. Citizens who claim that our council is slow in the matter of street im provement should attend a few scs nlon.1 from time to time and then they would have an idea of why street improvement is not progress ing with more speed. The actions of the city dads arc guided by the city charter nud the improvement of 11 street, according to its pro visions, takes more time nud more red tape than ninny imagine. As it is, we doubt if there is n city of its size in America that has done more street improvement in the last three years than the city of St. Johns, America, Will Leave St. Johns. R. S. Moore of the Toggery who has been seriously ill with ncr vous prostration for the past three weeks, has decided to dispose of his business interests here aud will leave St. Johns in the near future Mr. Moore came from W. Va. to Oregon for his health five years auo and was so greatly bcucfittcc that he felt able to again engage in business. But since his recent at tack he has been compelled to re tire aud seek a recreation. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Wright and granddaunhter of Newark, Ohio, whom have been visiting their sons, Ray and Stanley Wright of St. Johns for the past week, have re turned home on account of the death of their son. Mystus Wright, who died at Antwerp, Belgium, on Aug. 25th. He intended to leave Antwerp on August 13th for New York, but was taken ill with sleep ing sickness, of which he has had four attacks since 1808. Three years ago he slept 154 days out of six mouths. His body will lie shipped from Antwerp Sept. 3rd to Newark, for burial. Deceased was 34 years of age. At the M. K. church Sunday, Sept. 4th; Sunday school 10 a. til. They state that it is u trillc less than $7, 000,000, or $25 for every liinu, woman nud child residing in that city. Our information came from a source that we considered relia ble, and when we noted that Port laud was begging her business men to purchase bonds which it seemed no one else wanted, we were led to believe that the indebtedness was much higher than is admitted by the dailies. It is not our purine to misrepresent anything, aud there fore cheerfully make this statement, advertise property it is beci Our impwsion remains, however, C1Bap, McKINNKY & IV that l'nrtlntm s Intnl indehti'iliifits I that Portland's total indebtedness is vastly greater. We wrote the city treasurer of thut city asking for the totul amount almost a week ago, but so far he has refused to re ply. We believe the indebtedness of the water department alone is more than $7,000,000, nud we challenge any one to prove other wise, despite the statement alleged to have emiuatcd from the auditor. Thomas Glover had a very nar row escape from being captured by a big bear while out in the wilds of the Washougal country last week with several St. Johus uimrods. He had wandered to some little dis tance from the party trying to cap ture some frisky trout when he heard a suspicious noise in the bushes. From the sound produced lie was sure it was a bear of enor mous proportions, and Having no firearms with him and encumbered by a heavy pack ou his back, the time he made in reaching the party would have put to shame the fleet est foot racer that ever existed. Upon investigation by the party the noise Mr. Glover heard was found to be caused by two saplings cross ing each other aud the action of the wind caused them to vibrate back nud forth. As to the veracity of the above we would refer you to r. Glover's companions. Pine lot, 50x100, South Ivanhoe street, 495.00, with street improve ments paid, ou easy terms.
