FRIDAY, JULY 15, 1910 "Cap" Snow has quite a lengthy dissertation on marriage and di vorce in tills issue, and vc give it space because it is nil expression of a man vviio lias quite a record ns an attorney in divorce affairs. We do not, however, agree with the "Cap" in nil his deductions. We believe marriage is n sacred relation. Wc do not believe God approves of n large number of the marriages tiiat arc made in these modern times. Too many arc brought about through u spirit of sensuality, con venience nnd without n proper re gard to the fitness of one for the other. The marriage relation has lost much of its sactcdncss in this century. The divorce court is an easy method of escape and the knowledge that the tic 'can be broken upon the most trivial ex cuse leads many men to marry without giving scarcely any thought to the compatibility of one for the other. The records of the divorce courts of the United States arc a disgrace that is deeply to be deplored. The much touted poly gamy of the Mormons in former dnys was decency itself compared with the polygamy in practice in this land of the free to day. The Mormons cared for nil their wives, nnd divorce was almost n thing unknown. Today men marry nnd in n few months cast their wives nsidc like n broken toy by way of the divorce courts, nnd then seek nnothcr. There is no limit to the number of divorces n man tuny secure. He can break as many hearts ns he mny desire and k'et he is looked upon as n rcspcctn-l !c mail. Isn't it deplorable in the extreme f And yet we throw cnl uiiiuy nnd odium upon the Mor mons, when mnuy of our country men nrc mnuy times more disgrace ful than they are claimed to be nnd have less regnrd for women and the marriage relation. The rich men of today nrc the grentcst sinners. In every daily pajwr is recorded some case where they have cast n wife nsidc nud taken up with nu "nmnity.M To suggest that God E Free Ferry Project The Commercial club held an in teresting meeting in the city hall Wednesday evening. The most important matter taken up was the proposition of a free ferry at St. Johns. It is believed that such n project can be successfully carried through. It is the purpose of the club to petition the legislature to build, operate and maintain a free ferry at St. Johns, A committee consisting of F. W. Valentine, O. P. Wolcott and A. V. Marklc was appointed to act in conjunction with n like committee from the city council iu ascertaining the amount necessary to obtain the slips and approaches (including the franchise) from the St, Johns Transportation Co. It is realized that the ferry boat cannot be purchased on ac count of the public not being satis fied with it. Therefore, if n reason able price could be secured for the approaches, there is no doubt but that the people of St. Johns would be willing to put it up. Another interesting meting of the club is promised for next Wed nesday night, when the matter of n depot nt St. Johns will be taken up, among other things of interest. Come out nnd offer your views. Excursion and Picnic. The boys of Grace church male chorus gave n moonlight excursion nnd picnic nt Summit Park, 011 the United Railway's line, Wednesday evening. Arriving nt the park about 8 o'clock, the wives nud best girls of the bunch prepared lunch they had brought, while our royal chefs, Albert, WentV-nnd Downing, prepared coffee and other refresh ments. After n sumptuous lunch, several hours were spent in music nud fun, such ns only the boys cnu give, ns wc hnve some fine talent iu the bunch. At n late hour wc departed for Portland and our homes, planning for another good time soon. One of the Hunch. A. W. Once more the voters of St. Johns will have an opportunity of regis- teriug in order to vote at the next election. The books arc open nt the city hall and it is incumbent upon the legal voters to ugulu give their pedigree. Of ull the meaning less, uselessuess and Heedlessness ol red tape environing the privilege of voting iu this state, this is the limit, To be compelled to register twice within four mouths is certain ly "going some." Kast Portland is suiTeriug from n water famine, and some of the city paers ore devoting much space to tins deplorable stnte ot utlulrs, much as they dislike to do so. Those annexation enthusiasts iu St. Johns have n little food for re flection in this. - m mm, if HI If there is any thoroughfare in St. Johns that needs a generous application of oil it is Willamette boulevard. It is the most traveled highway iu the city, and as it is a county road still, pressure should be brought to bear upon the county authorities to have the dust uui saucc along the boulevard abated. A good, strong petition might have the desired effect. The dust is now fully two inches deep and is rising all the time.
