FRIDAY, MAY 20, 19 10 The Qulnn hanging in Washing ton state last week was another horrible instance of the brutality ol legal murder with the noose. The details are simply nauseating. If capital punishment must obtain in this enlighttned age, for mercy sake let it be in a more humane and merciful manner than with the rope. A relic of barbarous times, it should be consigned to the scrap Eile. Sometimes it seems that we avc not progressed, that the shadow of the dark ages still hover over us and at times envelope us in its folds. The old Mosaic law of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth still clings to us, and yet we claim to be enlightened. Surely capital punishment should be abol ished or we should renounce all claim to advancement, progress and enlightenment. Rather let us adopt the more humane way of im prisonment for life. Who are we that we should condemn a man to death, that we should destroy the life (hat God gave? It is one blot upon the fair name of this grand old state of Oregon that she still ap proves of and executes legal mur derand murder it is, whatever else we may be pleased to term it. It is strange how little things sometimes attract and hold the at tention of vast numbers of people. The little comet that has been gracefully Hailing through the air on the wings of the morning for the past week or so is a striking illustration. Apparently no larger and in many ways similar to a small fish with n luminous tuil, yet barrels and barrels of printers' ink has been used in telling of its won ders, the superstitions it has aroused, and the dire results that might follow in its wake. Time was, thirty ycats or more ago, when a comet many times larger came sailing through the western heavens, and because men with nothing to do hut look for specks in the sky were few and far be tween, the phenomenon occasioned but slight comment, mast people CaprNlM 17 I" Onttiolt Atrtlil C., CIJ St. Johns, April 29, 1910. The country is saved, how ever, and the little visitor still pur sues the even tenor of its way, The tea store in the Tower block on North Jersey street closed up shop this week and will seek new pastures. This has been the fourth or fifth establishment to open up in this buildiug during as ninny years, and as not one of them used the columns of the Review in adver tising their wares, not one suc ceeded. This may have been only a coincident, but if any heed Is paid to the matter it will be not leal that invariably it is the man that does not advertise that goes out of business.
