FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1916 Councilman Downey's proposl- tiou. made Tuesday night at conn cil meeting, to improve Bradford street from Fcsscndcn to Richmond by planking same the full width is certainly a very good one, and should meet with no opposition by the property owners adjacent there to. It is imperative that a decent roadway be constructed alone this badlv congested thoroughfare. In its present state it is almost impos siblc to use the street with a team of horses, whereas if it was planked, it would provide a fine driveway the entire distance for hauling of any nature. This street has ever been a dangerous one, and every year it is becoming more so. There fore, since the project of its im provement is being launched, it is to be hoped that none will stand in the way of its improvement as pro posed. The march of progress de mands that this street be improved, and any party objecting is an im pediment to the development of St. Johns. New life was infused into the Commercial club Wednesday even inz. and it was decided to make another strong effort to place it in the class where It rightfully be longs. A request will be made of the city authorities to hold the meetings hereafter in the council chamber of the city hall. If this is granted, and there is every reason to believe that no objection will be made, it is believed more interest will be taken in the organization. The dues and assessments will in a large measure at least be done away with, which should remove any objection any one might en tertain for joining the club aud get ting their shoulders to the wheel. It will, indeed, be a deplorable state of affairs if there are not enough people in St. Johns with the good of . the city at heart to form a good, live Commercial1 club. A mass meeting nt a later date will be called, good speakers will be secured and , all will, be given a 1 I President Homan. Dr. Fletcher Homan, president of Willamette University at Salem.
