About Sassasfras
Sassafras crows native iu eastern
United States and Mexico. It grows
more robust iu the Southern Slates
and Mexico and sometimes grows
to n tree near one foot in diameter
and twenty-five or thirty feet tall
In the New England States it is
merely a shrub. In the Southern
States there are two varieties, the
white and red, but botanically the
same, nud the difference feccms to
be caused by the conditions in
which it grows.
Sassafras should be gathered in
the fall as that is the time when all
the strength goes to the roots, the
bark of the root being used. The
pith is also used to make a muci
lage which is soothing to irritated
surfaces of mucous membranes,
It grows wild and iu great quan
tities iu some sections, but the dc
mand for it is not sufficient to cause
many to be interested iu the col
lection of it, though there is n great
deal used. The peculiar, pleasant
taste and odor of sassafras makes it
very valuable as nu adjunct iu the
nrenaration of medicines that have
a disagreeable taste and odor. It
will often overcome the most offen
sive odors and taste of other drugs
which have the curative properties.
A tea made of sassafras by steep
ing in boiling water has long been
used as a tonic nud blood purifier,
and is n very popular remedy for
these purposes throughout the
country
