I herewith ntinouiicc myself as nil Independent candidate for the office of Councihnnii of the Second Wnrd of the city of St. Johns nt the municipal election to be licit April 4U1. I'. Hill. Work for a Grantor St. Johns. An English poem refers to a Indy ns "TJic woman with 11 serpent's tongue." Deadly, perhaps, such a tKTSonnce would foe, but linvc you ever considered a worse aspect? Suppose the serpents possessed women's toniriies. My, how the woods would ring I a Cheer up mid smile, the world is young, and knows hut few that sor row; to-day n souk upon the ton riio brings happiness to-morrow. Don't pine or heave n wistful sigh, or wish for things, the white; but strive for honors justly yours, and smile, you lobster; singe I two ways to tret to steal or to inherit- There nre only rich quick' ntitl thc.c present about equal chances of failure In the end. When wc steal, the law takes away our illy-gotten gain; when wc inherit, the law, through its emissaries, again comes forward anil does the same thing. So, if wc enn't cam a fortune in the good, old-fashioned way of working hard for It, then, for goodness sake, let us stay poor. Wc have no sympathy for the sympathy ntrikc, because the prin ciple of it is wrong nutl causes suf fering nnd loss to innocent people. Why should nu employer who treats his employes humanely nutl pays them just wages, be compelled to shut down his works in order that his employes may help to wreak vengeance or bring to time nu unjust employer? It's not right. The sympathy striker shows neither justice nor good common sense. Perrine Scents a Joker Ed. Review: I rise to a point of information, I noticed in the last issue of the Review, an article "Concerning the Charter Amend ments," by II. K. Collier, City At torney. He says: The proposed amendment of Section 71 gives the Mayor and City Council power nnd authority to lease public wharves nnd docks belonging to the city for a period uot to exceed twenty Gve year, whereas under our present CliarUi like property can only be leased for a term not to exceed five year.. Said section also makes more tk fi nite and certain the procedure as to giving notice and the manner of making leases nnd sncs of real property belonging to the city. Mr. Editor, liere is a joker. 1 lie proposed amendment says: "Tfie city of St. Johns may sell any building or parcel of laud owned by it which may not be needed for public uses, nnd the Council shall be the exclusive judges as to whether such property is needed for public use." In the word "Ex elusive," to my mind, lies the joker. Are the people of St. Johns ready -nnd willing to give any man, or set of men, "exclusive" right to trade at their expense? If so, then I want to be elected councilman at large so I can have n hand in the pot. To illustrate what I mean; Our city dock can be sold for $75, 000. The Council has exclusive right to sell. Councilman Cook said a few weeks ngo in the Review that he was getting old and wanted a few good things now, or some thing to that effect, so he was in favor of selling the dock. Now five councilmcn and the mayor could sell the dock, they could have the "exclusive " right, lave coun cilmcn and mayor at $10,000 apiece would be f 60,000. Now sixty thousand nutl seventy thousand would be $130,000. Now do you suppose you could buy back the dock for two hundred thousand dollars? This would give the old men something of a stake at the expense of future generations, Peo ple of St. Johns, arc you ready for Huchntlcul? Urother Collier may smooth this thing over, or he may not know. He may satisfy the G. O. I'.'s, but not the Socialists. The subject will be discussed in the M. W. A. liall next Sunday at 3 p. 111. All who arc interested, come. Yours for a true Democracy, G. L. Pcrrine. 1 1M. IVWf '" A IV . I NOBBY OUR SUCCESS in the past proves the- security of our bank. Bank your money with us.
