There is some food for thought in the difference between the price of livestock at the packing plant, ns quoted each week in the Review, and the price asked by ttie butcher. Who gets the difference? The spectacle of young girls standing at the cntrnnccs of saloons Saturday and requesting the patrons to buy chances on a piano contest was far from being a pleasing sight. Parents should restrain their daugh ters from this practice, ns it only can lead to something worse. No Daren t would be pleased to hear a saloon habitue address their girls in the manner some of them were spoken to and the endearing names they were called Saturday. It is bad enough to hold tip pedestrians on the street in nu indiscriminate manner on such a mission, but is certainly far from a dignified man tier in which to secure a piano or anything else. General Compton, V. R. C. of St. Johns, nfter severnl years of struggles and discouragements, has at last attained nu enviable position. They arc not only growing numcr icnlly, but they arc becoming more and more united in their work. At the last meeting in January they adopted the infant sou of their late president, and as he is a sturdy little youngster and the grandson of a veteran, wc shall expect great things of him. On February 26th, the W. R. C. will give a camp-fire ami dinner at Portsmouth of which 11 more ex tended notice will be given in the future. At the next regular meeting, Pchtutiry 19, there wili be a large amount of work. A chaplain and a treasurer will be elected, also sev eral candidates will be initiated. All members are requested to come early. Mrs. R. II. M., Press Cor. A Mammoth Industry Mr. Fred Gunn, bf the Gunn Sectional Bookcase Company, for the past month has been traveling over Oregon searching for a loca tion for a branch of their vast Grand Rapids, Michigan, factory. During this time he visited Eugene and Oregon City with the idea of locating there, but decided that neither place was exactly suitable for an establishment of the magni tude which he wished to start to supply the Pacific Coast Territory. He then changed his search for a suitable location to this city and we understand from reliable authority that he has practically decided to locate on the Swift tract south of the packing plant. Our under standing is that a factory larger than the Swift plant will be built and that employment will be given to 700 men. Not only docs this company manufacture book cases, but desks, office furniture and in fact furniture of nil descriptions. A factory employing 700 hands means an increase of at least 3500 in the population of the city and in addition will give employment to a large number of men, to supply the wants of this army of workers. Portland has long needed factories and a pay roll and the advent of the Swifts on the peninsula was only a beginning to the large utiin ber of Pastern firms who will re cognize Portland as the logical man ufacttiring center of the Pacific Coast.
