The Electric Theatre is certainly
putting ou some fine pictures these
evenings. 1 bey arc well attended
and the patrons realize that they
get their money's worth every time.
The charter commission, recently
appointed and which lias held
several sessions, has decided, among
other things, to recommend that
the term of city officials be changed
to two years instead of one year, as
now obtains.
Plans for the new Catholic church
to be built on Portland boulevard
have been completed and the con
tract will soon be let. This will be
the finest church edifice in St.
Johns, according to the plans. A
school and parsonage will be erect
ed later ou.
V. S. Latitliers. who purchased
the itvcry and teed stables of Tlios.
Cochran on Burlington street the
past week, will, we understand,
erect n modern building thereon in
the near future, which he will
occupy with His Hour and feed
business.
M. S. Cobb has rejoined our list
of advertisers this week with a
goodly sized announcement. He
has a fine stock of goods and his
prices arc as low as can be obtained
in Portland or anywhere else for
the same grade of goods. Read his
ad over and sec if you are not in
terested.
Thomas Cochran, who recently
sold his fine home ou North Hayes
street to Hubert Simmons, intends to
build another handsome residence
on tnc corner ot Charleston and
Hayes. The house will be thorough-
ly modern in every respect and will
prove a valuable addition to that
part of the city.
The Marine Iron Works is com
pleting a slip at the Richmond
street dock so that the Chinook will
not interfere with the use of the
ower dock. All river boats can
and with ease when the slip is
finished. Work ou the vessel is
progressing swimmingly.
The W. O. W. have organized a
fine drill team and propose setting
apart one night in each month in
giving entertainments for the bene
fit of the organization. The basket
social held last Wednesday evening
netted almost 540. Announcement
of their next entertainment which
will be something different each
time, will soon appear.
Parties who subscribed for Don-
ville Monthly Magazine through
the Review should receive a copy
of same this week, Any one wiio
fails to receive same should advise
us of the fact, and we will endeavor
to find out the reason. The maga
zine has consolidated, after a sus
pension of a couple of months, with
the New West, and comes out
under that title. All subscriptions
date with this month.
A couple of gentlemen were in
St. Johns during the past week
looking for a location for what they
claimed to be a $500,000 plant
which would employ about 300
workmen. They were quite secre
tive concerning the nature of the
plant. Several sites were looked
at, and the gentlemen departed
promising to return in the near fut
ure for a more careful review of
the situation here.
Mrs. M. J. Yeagy has opened up
first class dressmaking parlors in
the French block and is now ready
to serve the ladies of St. Johns in a
modern and up-to-date manner.
She has recently came from Chi
cago, where sne graduated from a
eading institution there, and there
fore is well fitted to fashion and
mould ladies' wearing apparel into
the latest design and finish, Read
her ad in this issue. It should in
terest every woman in St. Johns.

Mrs. Vinson, who conducts a
small grocery on South Jersey
street, summoned the police Mon
day night to arrest a party whom
she thought was breaking into the
upper story of her store minding.
Upon investigation it was discov
ered that a young man had been
rooming in the buitdiug for a week
or so by permission, and when this
fact became established the chief
allowed the young man his liberty.
