Mr. Tnft has come and gone nud
left behind him myriads of new
and sincere friends who were capti
vated by his sunny smile nud his
hearty, cheerful manner of greeting.
His speeches in the west, hovever,
were not ail well received by the
Republican clement in many
sections, which, ns a natural result,
causes Democrats to feel jubilant.
When Mr. Tnft attempts in his
utterances to assure the people that
he is, has and will continue to carry
out the Roosevelt policies he can
easily discover Ins mistake by re
fcrrinc to the past record of his
fighting predescessor. Mr. Roose
velt, although often wrong on new
issues, had, nevertheless, to be con
vinced of his error by the strongest
possible proof: when his stand was
once taken upon any question
neither the powerful influence of an
Adrich or the roar of n Lnnnon
could alter his course by one degree.
Then, again, if Mr. I aft is sincere
in his eesire to follow in the foot
steps of the former President he
must keep in mind the fact that
Mr. Roosevelt was a man who was
constantly up and doing. He com
bined work with play, and when
not engaged in the usual routine
duties of his office he could be
found writing strenuous and vol
tuitions messages to congress or
industriously simplifying words to
suit Andy Carnegie's ideas of
correct spelling. It is willingly ad
mitted Hint the game of golf is n
trood form of exercise and that n
cheerful smile indicates 1111 optimis
tic nature, which is good American
form, nllright, while frequent trips
over the country may draw many
unthinking or indifferent votes to
the aid of .second-term aspirations,
yet if nil that this nation required
of n President was n incut with suffi
cient ability to smile, play golf and
travel there would be but tittle
difficulty in securing good presiden
tial timber by either party even if
the term of ollice was reduced from
four years to four weeks. While
most Republicans do not question
Mr. Tafts further abilities, yet
ninny ask "what else has he accoin
plished?" The American people
ure indulgent enough with tlieir
Presidents, mid the only favor
really asked by them of Mr. Tnft
since his election was that he main
tain the stand 011 the new tariff
question ns iutimnted by him in his
campaign utterances, to the effect
that the revision of the Payne tariff
bill would be downward and thete-
by beneficial to the consumer. Hut,
whatever Tuft's good intentions
may have been along this line he
allowed them to be smothered by
the Adrich-Cuuiiou corporation-fed
bunch and the enple were, ns
usual, left out in the cold, liven
this lack of either Imck-boue or
Mnccrity may have been forgiven
him had not Mr. Tnft came west
