LOCAL FIRM GOT
CONTRACT
For New School Building
in East St. Johns
Howltt & Wright, tho local con
tractors, wore the successful bidders
for tho now school building in East
St. Johns. Tho plans show that tho
building will bo n flue ono and will
mnko an Imposing structure, It Is cer
tainly gratifying Hint a local firm
has secured tho contract us tho
mouoy will now remain In St. Johns
Instead of being carried olsawherc,
as would havo been tho caso had
an outside firm gotten tho contract.
Tho reputation of both Messrs. Haw
lit and Wright as finished workmen
Is welt established and tho public
can rest assured that tho contract
was not misplaced when It was
awnrded thesu gontlumen. Tho
structure Is to bo completed by
September first. Howltt &
Wright nro now completing u
school hoiiHo of n similar nature at
Houlton, and work will start without
delay on tho now contract.
Be Kind of "Aisy
When tho O. It. & N. Co. gets
ready to construct u track to con
nect with tho city dock It is to bo
hoped that parties owning laud over
which this lino must traverse will
not hold up tho company to too great
an extent. It will bo n bad thing for
tho city If condemnation proceedings
will havo to be Instituted lu order
to socuro n ronsonnblo price. Tho
dock will not bo loaned unless n con
nection with tho railroad Is guaran
teed, and If legal proceedings are
necossary before a right of way can
bo secured It moans that sovoral
months will bo lost boforo tho dock
Is tuken possession of, nnd as tho
lutoicst on tho monoy is In tho
neighborhood of $10 per dlom It is
of vital Intorcst to tho city that tho
proporty ownors bo roasonablo In
their demands. '
A Good Gamble
A' letter from Vlco Presldont David
son of the Eastern Oregon Oil & das
Co, states that tho Mammoth Co.,
whoso flold adjoins that of tho
Eastern Oregon Oil & Qas Co., Is
now down BOO feet with their drill
and that tho odor of gas was so
strong that It made tho workmen
sick, compelling a short lay off, nnd
that tho tools had bocomo so oily
that thoy can scarcely bo handled.
r. Davidson la also managor of tho
Mammoth company. Mr. Hunt, who
has the contract for putting down
tho well for tho Eastern Oregon Oil
Qas Co.. now has tho dorrlck tim
bers un and tho buildings are being
erected. At this distance It certain-
looks as though tho St Johns mem
bers of this company mndo a "kill
ing" when they Invested In tho Mai-
hour oil fields.
Going Rapidly
Tho first consignment of combina
tion salt and pepper shakers from tho
EaBt arrived several weeks ago ana
disappeared like hot cakos. All who
saw them wanted ono nnd the sup-
ply was soon exhausted. Anotner
car load has Just arrived, and it Is
believed they will share a like fato
their Dredecessors. The Combin
ation Salt & Pepper Shaker Co., of
which B. C. Hurlbert is tho Inventor,
certainly seem to havo a winner and
the stockholders will no doubt soon
reari a colden harvest. The banal-
ness of the article is seen at irst
glance and households wboro ono 01
these ingenious inventions are not
found will be few and far between
in a few years.
THE PYLES RETURN.
J. Pyle and family have returned
to St. Johns after a snort resiaence
In Spokane. Wash., and will lane up
their abode In tho residence Just
acated by W. A. Olen on Chicago
street. Mr. Pyle a musician 01

to suit him quite bo well as Bt.

A Lengthy Session
Tho city council met In regular

ner of Leonard and Holbrook HtreoU
was accoptod and placed on fllo.
Hills totalling $3370 were al
lowed.
Chief Qrnngor of the flio depart
ment asked that a sub station bo
established lu tho neighborhood of
tho French block bo that a hose
cart could bo placed there. On mo
tion Mayor Hondrlcks appointed
Councllmen Doble. Drown nnd HlHer
as a commltteo to look Into tho mat-

Tho St. Johns Transportation
company turned In tholr report for
tho month of Aprll.whlch snowea
tha4 5,000 foot passengers, 32C single
rigs nnd 135 double rigs had been
transported on tho ferry for that
month. A check for $5.30 accom
panied tho report as tho city's divi
dend of the receipts. Accepted.
The mayor suggested that an or
dinance bo drawn covering tho life
of comont walk. Ho believed In
Justlco to tho property ownors that
tho contractors be required to guar-
antep their work for a period ofilvo
years at least. Referred to the city
attorney.
On motion the engineer was di
rected to place a grade monument
at city ball grounds.
The lighting of the city dock was
discussed, and it was decided to re
quest Mr. Hamilton of tho Portland
General Electric Co. and local men
to siuicest Plans that are modern and
up to date and then advertise for
bids.
Tho Wlllamotto boulevard problem

was the advanced; oy ex-uouum-
man Windle. A motion that tho city
attorney be Instructed to draw up a
resolution or ordinance to straighten
out tho boulevard to 80 feet was
oted down four to two. It Is a
difficult matter to ascertain Just how
wide this thoroughfare was Intended
to be, as the records seem to con
flict. In somo cases calling for 80
feet and In others for 100. The at
at this placo and returning to Port- mont who would not sign n potltlon

somo reason tho project fell through, laturo when tho tlmo Is ripe. Every
but it is likely money for this pur -
poso could yet bo obtained from them.
Tho Btnto could oven contribute to
tho cause, wo bcllovo.
No movement of any magnitude
has yet been launched without plc;ity
of opposition lu Its Inclplency, nnd
this will be no exception to tho
rule. There will bo objections, nnd
mnny of them, but tho object to bo
obtained Is so far reaching In Its
possibilities that any effort mado
