Tho crushor Is situated about 100
feot up tho canyon from tho plnco of
loading. Thoy havo built two cars
with a capacity of two tons oach
which aro connected with oach other
by a cable which passes over a drum
or windlass. Tlioso run on an Iron
track from tho bins to tho placo of
, loading down a steep grado. Tho
weight of the loaded car brings the
empty ono back from tho loaumg
placo to tho bins, and just half way
between tho two points Is locntod u
switch which Is operated from tho
bins by moans of a wire, so that tho
ono In charge of tho cars has them
under full control at all times.
There were flvo teams hauling
Friday and they were not able to
keep nearly up with the machine and
they have tho shortest haul there
will bo In tho city. The coarsest hi
was almoBt full and tho screenings'
bin was throo-quartors full, whllotho
' ' middle bin was about ono-third full,
and tho teams wero all hauling out
ot it. When the quarryraen havo tho
quarry fully opened so that the mill
can bo supplied to Its capacity and
the haul extended to the top ot the
hill it will take fifteen or twonty
teams to keep the crushed rock away
from tho bins.
Tho city has In tho rock crushor,
if properly managed after the quarry
is fully opened up a moneymaker. For
it does Its work rapidly, easily and
thoroughly, and it will bo ablo to
mako crushed rock faster than it
will be possible for the city to use.
We believe that it would bo to the
city's interest to make arrangement
to furnish rock to outside parties at
a price that would make a fair profi
to the city. There Is no doubt but
that every ton tho city could produce
could be thus disposed of and the
machine might thus be made, in
time, to pay for itself aside from the
use of the city proper.
The work of spreading the rock on
the streets is going along slowly.
There Is too much mud on a part of
the streets, Pittsburg, for Instance.
There they had to plank the street
from tho ferry slip up to tho railroad
track, Then Instead of going up to
Crawford street thoy go up tho rail
road track on IJrndford to Snlom. It
st ems that ono or two of tho parties
on Pittsburg onst of tho trnck will
not sign tho waiver which will porml

A Happy Surprise
A very happy surprise was sprung
upon tho family of P. T. Hansen Fri
day evening ot last week, by tho' ar
rival of Mrs. Hansen's oldest brother,
F. W. Johonnot of Minnesota. Mrs.
Hanson bad not soen her brother for
over 24 years, and it was a glad
rounlon all around. The, Hansons
hopo that his stay will be a long
one. Mrs. M. V. Walker, Mr. Han
son's daughter is still a resident of
thlt- city and the prospects are good
for her to remain here permanently.

head office of the Kavanagh com
pany will be brought from Seattle
to Portland and that she will have
her work so changed that she will
be able to remain here permanently.
The delightful climate of Oregon
will do more to bring and keep the
people here from tho frozen north
and east than anything else and St.
Johns is especially favored in this re
spect and tho best placo of all in
the great state for a homo.
