building permits in another column.
We did not have room for them in
last week's issue and have two
weeks' issue in one. The showing
docs not indicate it very severe
stringency in money matters. We
will put St. Johns up against any
thing of her size for improvements
nnd pro.sjKjrity.
If the boys in St. Johns who
have been in the habit of spending
$15 or $20 it month for boo.e will
deposit that amount In the bank

The St. Johns float attracted con

This ordinance we believe should
we will have the nth and 12th
grades taught in the public schools
of St. Johns.
We most certainly do not wish
to be considered back numbers in
education any more than in any
other department of life. We
would all consider it an insult to be
called antiquated, out of date, be
hind the times. Yet if wc vote to
have but a two, instead of a four
year high school course, and teach
here only the 9th and 10th grades
of high school work, wc would
brand ourselves in the eyes of the
whole state of Oregon, us well as
the other western states, as being
all that, and more too.
liven little Hood River, with
tic more than half the population
of St. Johns, has her full four year
course.
If wc have the four year course
wc will keep our voting people at
home, the money incident to their
will be
spent in St. Johns instead of going
to Portland and to the street car
company. At home there will be
two hours more every day for
study or recreation than when the
pupils arc obliged to ride to and
from the city. There is less dan
ger of accident, less opportunity for
exposure and consequent sickness.
Wc all know what the cars arc dur
ing a great part of the fall and
spring mouths, when it is too warm
ior the heaters and too cold to run
without them. Wc nil know the
great number oi cases where a se
vere com, icvcr, even pneumonia
resulted from these rides. It cer
tainly will be cheaper for us to
keep the youngsters at home,
where they can be comfortable,
where we can be with them, licit)
be passed by all means, for tlie them, enjoy their company ns much

Instead of taking action under the
city laws, nil the fines go to the
stnte, whereas if there is n city law
all the fines accrue to the city, and
give greater force to the law be
cause of its being a local matter in
stead of general,
City Attorney Collier presented
written report stating that the city
could not recover in their suit
against the bondsmen for Yonntr-
ferdorf and that they need not have
paid the Yoiiugferdoif claims and
that the city was short just that
much money.
Upon request of n number of cit
izens, Captain Hlack asked for the
appointment of a new special officer
for the ball grounds.
On motion of Hunter, the rock
crusher was ortlered placed nt the
as possible before they leave us for
good; than to be obliged to send
them to Portland two years (before
they go to college) where they will
be nwny from us nil day, where wc
may know nothing of their com
panions, where the expense is
double what it would be at home,
where everything is against their
best interest and nothing to be
gained.
Let us all turn out and vote for n
full four yenr course to be taught
here in St. Johns.

Can Eczema be cured ?
Some physicians say "Yes."

The real question is, "What is

those scaly eruptions, those dis

longer be any question but that
these forms of Eczema are curable.

we put the best stock iuto our jobs.
The difference between poor

is a small item when you consider
the value of the job. It is the
price of a satisfied customer. It is
better to make 50 cents less on a
job and have a customer who will

lose your customer. That is the
way we figure it.
