Karlc D. Walker has opened an
other cigar stand in front of Ma

stands. Karl is a successful cigar
dealer and keeps a flue line of
cigars, tobaccos, pipes and smokers
supplies on hand. He also carries
a fine line of box candies.
Miss Stella Campling was down

teaching school and spent Sunday
with the home folks. She made
the trip on the North Bank road
When trains run more frequently

U. T. I.vggett tins succeeded it
getting the commissioners to im
prove Richmond street down to the
city dock. This street is the old
county road and Mr. Lcggctt has
been working with the- commission
crs for a long time to get them to
have this work done. They in
structcd bur genial Roadmaster
Simmons to do this work soon as
possible and work was commenced
Tuesday.
Dr. Ben h. Nordeu, candidate
for county coroner, visited St.
Johns this week in the interest of
his candidacy for the republican
nomination. Dr. Nordeu was horn
in Portland 31 years ago and is a
practising physician in his home
city. He met many of his old
friends who feci confident of his
election, ns they feel that the time
has arrived when the coroner a
office should be filled by n phy
siciuu.
W. B. Kvaus, who has been cm
ploycu Mil the cordage works In
Portland, met with a very painful
accident Wednesday of last week.
While at work a steel bar weighing
several hundred pounds dropped
upon the great toe of his left foot
and mashed nil of it off that came
under the bar. Brother Kvaus is
obliged to go with a flat wheel
since, and it is n great inconven
ience, we know how it is aud he
has our sympathy.
Mr. Griffiths with D. R. Norton,
met with quite a painful accident
last week. He, with others, was
moving the piano in Ulckucr's hall
from the floor to the stage, and in
some unaccountable manner the
ilano was allowed to topple over on
lim. It preserved the piano from
injury but it was rather hard on
Mr. Griffiths aud laid him up for
several days. If this would hap
pen to some of the piano contor
tionists we have been compelled to
listen to it would be a blessing to
humanity, but to come to an indus
trious young man like Mr. Griffiths
seems the irony of fate. We are
glad to see lihii out at his post of
duty again, however. You couldn't
keep some people down if you put
house on them. '
Some one or more, and we think
it is more, persons, who have no
regard for the seventh command
ment nor yet for the laws of the
laud and of the city have been in
the habit of entering the banquet
hall of the Odd Fellow's lodge aud
stealing all they could put their
hands on that is good to cat. At
the recent basket social they stole
two or three or more baskets, aud
Monday night of this week they
went iuto the banquet hall after
the guests had departed aud car
ried off a large number of oranges,
some pies, a lot of cake aud other
eatables which did not leloug to
them. Such contemptible sneak
thieves should be taken over a bar
rel face dowu, their auatomies cul
tivated with a leather strap uutil
they would be compelled to eat
standing for a mouth.
J. E. Brink, of St. Johns, who
is well known here, was in the city
the first of the week in company
with C. A. Monroe aud I,. P. Bran
stetter of Ferndale, Cal., and are
looking over the field with the idea
of moving their bottling and can
ning factory to Hood River, aud
will consolidate with the Hood Riv
er Cider Vinegar Co., if additional
stock can be secured here. The
gentlemen appeared before the
Commercial club Tuesday evening
and bad a sample of the champagne
cider manufactured by Mr, Monroe
in California, and it was an excel
lent article. They have made
arrangements with Mr. Calkins to
consolidate with him and add the
bottling and canning machinery to
the already complete vinegar plant,
firovided 95000 additional is secured
n cash for a working capital.

The members of the Christian
church nre building a temporary
house of worship on their lot near
the Baptist church. This will save
them their rent, vhich they can
devote to swelling the building
fund for a fine structure. They
had commenced to make prepara
tions to build when the hard times
scare came ou and they hesitated to
do anything and concluded to put
up this house until after the presi
dential election, when matters be
came settled and then to build u
permanent place of worshiped.
The Artisans gave an entertain

Downey Lost His Clothes.
We met our good friend Sam
Downey on the street the other
day and were somewhat amused at
the way he was scoring the coun
cil for their late ordinance in re
gard to the relaying the water pipes.
Sam seemed to be in an unpleasant
frame of mind about it nud could
sec no way out ot tuc ouiicuiiy.
He would rather that the water
company should go ou in their own
unwarranted way ol slamming tlie
water pipes down any old way
than to have the council take
this action. Sam was dressed up
in a nice, clean suit of blue denim
overalls from head to foot and it
made him look fine, just like a la
boring mail. Wc never saw Sam
ookiug better and we wondered
why he was so disconsolate, ami it
never occurred to us until yesterday,
when another, a good friend of us
both whispered that Sain had been
jetting ou tlie election with that
Hewitt boy, (H. S) and lost all
lis good clothes, his bttnday suit,
lis newly dyed suit, in fact all the
clothes Sam had but the overalls,
aud he had to wear them until he
could get some others made, We
don't blame Sam for kicking this
time. Any old council that would
put us in the hole like that wc
would want cashiered, sandpapered,
varnished with tar, rolled in a
feather bed ami rode out of town
ou a bucking broncho. Our sym
pathy is with you Sam if it costs us
dollar.
