W. L. Thorndyke of the Astoria
Leader is receiving unusual notori
ety lust now, through a threatening
letter received from "One of the
Oaim" in the tenderloin district of
that city. This letter was the re
spouse made to some remarks pub
lished in the Leader recently criti
cisiug the conduct of that rotten
spot in Astoria's social life. The
letter gives Thorn .V) days to get
out of Astoria and threatens his
life if he remains. This is in keep
lug with the character of the in
dividual who infest such districts,
and so long as a city will permit
such moral lepers to live In their
midst the lives nud morals of their
coptc are in peril. It Is the hoc

writer of the letter may be appre
bended by the postal authorities
