Rev. N. W. Sager of Dallas will
preach morning and evening nt the
Iivangehcal church on Sunday,
March 15.
Sevcrt Glnrittn who has been
very ill is about ngnin. His wife
and mother were callers in our
town Monday.
John Shriner has sold his prop
erty in South St. Johns and will
go into business at Maegley June-
tio 1 in the near future.
Fraternal Brotherhood will give
a program ntid dance tonight iu the
M. W. A. Hall. Admission free.
All are invited to come and enjoy
the occasion.
Bickford & Tcunant have com
pleted and neatly painted their new
carpenter shop back of O. P. Wol
cott's office ou Charleston street.
It presents a neat appearance.
Henry Allen has been having a
high old time with the grip. He
doesn't think it so hilariously funny
as fighting bumble bees, aud there
is no honey iu it either. If he had
his choice he would rather go
fishing.
Mrs. Geo. II. Lynn, who has
been assisting us occasionally in
the office, went to Hood River
Tuesday of this week for a visit.
There is 110 place quite like Hood
Kivcr for her and when licr solid
fellow gets here from Omaha they
expect to make their home there.

is the heir apparent, the first born
Brother Grilhth is to be pardoned

young man grow up to be as good
looking as his father.
I). C. Rogers has been apoititcd
deputy assessor for St. Johns iu
accordance with the suggestion of
our friend, S. C. Cook and if there
ate any kicks coming 011 the next
assessment it will save our cople
the car fare necessary to personally
register a kick with the assessor.
We sympathize with Mr. Rogers.
The work is being pushed on
Philadelphia and Tnconm streets.
I lie only kick we have heard reg
istered is that of Mansfield, the
whisker scientist. He laments the
passing of his duck pond ou Taco-
ma. lie declares the beauty of the
street is gone since that placid lake
has been removed. He has our
sympathy.
Miss Adria Burkhart, who has
been visiting her aunts, Mrs. Try
on aud Mrs. Glover since the holi
days, returned to her home in
Albany last Saturday. Miss Burk
hardt is a very charming young
lady and made many friends during
her stay here who sincerely regret
that she found it necessary to re
turn home.
Just let your eye rest upon the
new ad of Petersen & Noce. These
gentlemen have received a fine line
of new shades iu cheviots ntid
worsteds which they arc making
into suits of the latest patterns.
1 ry them for your next suit. We
will guarantee that you will be
"suited" to your satisfaction, for
they are expert tailors.
Rev. G. W. Nelson has pur
chased the property of Henry
Yeske ou the corner of Oswego and
Hudson streets, repaired and refill-
ished the same and moved iu this
week. There they will be found
under their own vine and fig tree
and there we trust they may flour
ish like u green bay tree, or Jonah's
gourd but that they may not suffer
the fate of the latter.
W. E. Neff, one of our good
Hood River friends was iu the city
Wednesday aud made this office a
pleasant visit. Mr. Neff sold his
Hood River home last summer at a
good round price and has recently
purchased a 20-acre home near
Cornelius where he will make his
home in the future. We hope he
will make it as well there as he did
at Hood River for he is a fine fel
low and deserving of success.
There came near being another
frightful calamity iu an Ohio town
and this time it would have been
of greater interest to St. Johns, as
a niece of Mayor Couch, Miss Cor
rine Boultou was a pupil in the
school which burned. It was a
very large structure containing 52
rooms and over 1000 pupils attend
ed. Fifteen minutes later these
pupils would all have been iu their
places, aud it is hard to tell what
might have been the result. Ev
eryone must feel grateful that these
youug people were spared the dan
ger of such an experience.
The measly grip, seems to be
general in its visitations, hardly a
family escaping and in many cases
the entire family paying tribute to
its cussedness. We fooled it the
last time, however. Wheu the
grip had spit on its hands and tak
en a good tight hold ou us we took
a teaspoon ful of cayenne pepper,
on the advice of a friend, and it
cured us completely in about four
hours, and there was no bad after
effect as is always the case when
we used whiskey aud quinine; on
the contrary we never felt more
vigorous or free from the ills of
life. It is hot stuff, though, and
should not be given to any one
except in capsules, unless they are
put up like us, case hardened,
triple nickel-plated cast steel.
