There has been quite a bit of
sickness in this vicinity.
Mr. nud Mrs. Martin Rand have
just recovered from a scigc of the
grip. Also Mrs. Clclland was quite
sick a few days, but vc are pleased
to hear she is much better.
Harvey Rand, who has been sick
with grip is able to resume his
position in Mr. Thurmau's store.
We are pleased to see Henry
Thurman at his place in the store
again, as he has been sick for some
time, having had the grip in a very
bad form. He got some better but
took a relapse. However, he is
back looking his old self.
The Congregational minister, Mr.

Potter & Goold Sell Hard
ware Store to D. R. Norton.
Last Friday was closed a deal
whereby the stock of hardware
formerly owned by Potter & Goold
passed into the hands of D. R.
Norton, recently from Echo, Ore.
We were intimately acquainted
with Mr. Norton for a number of
years before he went to Echo and
wc can most heartily commend him
to our people as a gentlemen of en
crgy, good judgment, and as honest
as the day is long. More than this,
he is a genial, jolly, good fellow,
whose acquaintance our people
will all wish to cultivate. lie
shows his good judgment in coming
to St. Johns and wc urc sure that
in all their dealings with him our
people will be able to testify that
wc have told the truth in all else
wc have said.
Wc do not know just what
Messrs. Potter & Goold will do,
and wc hardly think they arc finally
decided as yet, themselves. Wc,
hope, however that they may find
it to their advantage to remain with
us, for wc will regret very much if
they decide to leave St. Johns.

this admonition, that if they wish

the old man now:
St Peter stood guard nt the Golden Gate,
With n soletu iticln and nn ftlr scdntc,
When up to the top of the golden stair
A man and a woman, ascending there,
Applied for admission. They came and
stood
Ilcforc St. Peter, so great and Kd,
In hopes the city of tcncc to win-
To ask St. Peter to let them In.
The woman was tall, and lank and thin,
With n scraucv bcartllct upon her chin.
The man was short, and thick ami stout,
Ills stomach was mint so It rounded out.
Ills face was pleasant, and all the while
He wore a kindly and ecntle smile.
The choirs in the distance the echoes
awoke.
And the man kept still while the woman
spoke.
Oh, thou who gunrdest the gate,"
said she.
"Wc come hither beseeching tlicc
To let us enter the heavenly land,
And play our harps with the angel baud.
Of inc. bt. Peter, there Is no doubt.
There's nothing from heaven to bar me
out,
I've been to mcctlnc three times a week.
Amlfllmokt ntwnys I'd rise and cnk.
"I've told the sinners about the day,

I've told my neighbors I've told 'cm all

I've shown them what they'd have to do
If they'd pass In with the chosen few;
I've marked their milt of duty clear,
I.nld out the plan lor their whole career.
"I've talked and talked to 'cm loud and
long,
I'or my lungs arc gocd and my voire Is
strong.
So, good bt. Peter, you'll clearly sec
The gate of heaten Is open to me.
Hut my old man, I regret to say,
Hasn't walked exactly in the narrow way
He smokes and he swears, and grave
faults he's gnt,
And I don't know whether he'll pass or
not.
And said to the Imp who atuwered the bell
"Kscort this Iaily around to Hell."
The man stood stilt as n piece of stone,
Stood sadly, gloomily, there alone.
A lifelong settled idea lie had,
That his wife was good and he wits bud.
He thought if the woman went down
below,
That he would certainly have to go
That If she went to the regions dim,
There wasn't a ghost of a show for him,
Slowly he turned by habit bent,
To follow where the woman went,
St. Peter standing on duty there.
Observed Hint the top of hit head was lure
He called the gentleman back and said:
"l'ricnd, how long have you been wed?"
"Thirty years." (with a weary sluhl
And then he thoughtfully asked him
Why?"
St. Peter was silent. With head bent
down,
lie raised his hand nud scratched his
crown.
Then seemed n different thought to take.
Slowly, Halt to Uimscll, lie spake,
"Thirty years with that 0ma11 there?
No wonder that man hasn't any hair!
Swcarlnt! is wicked. Smoke's no cooil,
He smoked and swore I should think
he would!
"Thirty years with that tongue so sharp!
Hot Angel Gabriel! Give him 11 harp!
A lewclcd ham with a ttoldcu strlni!
Good sir, pass in where the angels slngl

One with a cushion, up near the throne!
Call up Mine nugcls to slug their ticst,
Let him enjoy the music and rest.
"See that on the finest ambrosia he feeds
lie's had about all the hell he needs,
It isn't hardly the thing to do,
To roast him on earth nud the future too."
They gave
strings,
A glittering robe mid n w:r of wings,
And lie said ns he entered the realms of
day,
"Well, this beats cucumbers, auywayl"
And so the Scrltitnrc has come to iass.

If elected I will endeavor to
assess all property equitably re

Sigler last night. "Thot is my
platform, and it is the same prin

to conduct the office during my in
cumbency. I simply leave it to
the citizens of Multnomah county
to judge by my record whether or
not I have followed this policy."
Speaking of the conduct of the
assessor's office, Mr. Sigler called
attention to the fact that during
his term public utility franchises
were assessed for the first time. He
also showed that during the present
year nine public utility corporations

or $1000 for each business day,
more in taxes limn they did in
100.1, the year before Mr. Sigler
took the office. While the rate of
taxation was 40 mills in 190.1, the
present rate is only 14.2 mills.

the nine corporations mentioned by
Mr. Sigler wns $2,548,005 in 1004

Tobacco Always Clean.
Did you ever notice that tobacco
is always clean? If a man drops a
piece of meat, no matter how clean
the floor may be, he will either give

But let him drop his plug of to
