The Portland Collapsible Box Co. received a carload shipment of iron from the east this week. Mr. and Mrs. T. Humphrey of Jefferson, Ore., visited at the home of B. S. Hoover and family the forepart of . lust week. Mr. Humphrey is editor of the Jefferson Review. Rev. C. P. Gates went to Me Minuvlllc Wednesday to attend the wedding anniversary of his grand parents, Rev. and Mrs. joscpl Hobcrg. It was their 56th nnni vcrsary. The good roads meeting being held this week in the Portland Club rooms closing tonight will be of special interest to many of our people and today will be the best day of the meet. Let's all go. The ferry company has placed the new rudders on the steamer Tames John and she works tike charm. 1 lie captain says he can turn the boat on a half dollar piece. one rounds up to the dock just as gracefully as a regular Royal Mai liner, A. c. Lender, ad and job man and foreman of the News Letter of Hood River, with his wife, was in the city Wednesday of this week and called to sec the scribe, who was sorry to nave been out unti after their departure. Come again Hcrt, wc shall be very glad to see you at any time. We do not suppose it will do any Rood to say anything about street improvement, but wc wish that those who arc responsible for the "delectable" condition of some of our streets would Have to go through tlicm some dark night and that the electric lights would fail while they made the trip, so there. Potter & Goold seem to be scared over the financial situation. They received a big consignment of plated ware Wednesday and there is more coming. Wc believe that is the way to get scared scared that you will run out of goods when things jar loose, for there will be a big rush after a few days or weeks of scrimping and our merchants should be prepared for t. "Will those who reject Jesus Christ be lost eternally?" This vital question in regard to the future destiny of men will be the topic presented at the United Evan gclical church next Sunday even- ng at 7:30. At it a. m. the sub ject will be "The Impure Church," the third in the scries of the "Let ters to the Seven Churches of Asia." All are most cordially in vited to attend these services. Chester P. Gates, pastor. Messrs. Inglcdue & Ycrby have Hirchascd the West Coast Laundry of Messrs. Johnson & Ground, who formerly operated the plant and are putting it in first class shape for business. They will add new machinery in the near future and prepare to handle the laundry business of surrounding towns. They arc thorough business men and we anticipate service most sat- sfactory to their patrons. They inform us that their business has already doubled since taking hold of the plant. R, P. Robinson, superintendent of public instruction for Multno mah county, was in the city Tues- lay visiting the schools here. Mr. Robinson is a most enthusiastic educator and greatly interested in lis work. The schools of the county are most successful under his supervision which speaks strongly for his efficiency, We were very glad to meet him as we had known him several years in a business way but had never the pleasure of meeting him personally until that date. The city council is becoming a very weak sister. ihey meet every meeting night and adjourn without doing any business 011 account of the holidays. At the ast meeting Tuesday evening the matter of clearing the city of rats was discussed aud it seemed the opinion of the solons that this should be done lest that dread scourge ot the Asiatics, bubonic plague, should get a foothold here. We are not much scared at the plague, but we have no love for rats and we hope those who have supply ot tue rodents will eet busy and make them hard to catch. Miss Edith Anson is the luckiest unlucky girl in the city. A few days ago in crossing the street the chatelaine pin to her gold watch became unfastened and the ticker dropped in the soft dirt on the street. Mayor Couch drove along a few moments later and picked it up. The chronometer was ticking away as if nothing bad happened and the young lady was delighted to receive it back agaiu. Next time Miss Anson will endeavor to lose it in a safer place, for had not Mr. Couch s pony been very care ful to step over it the timepiece would have bad a bad case of indi gestion, gastritis or other iuternal disorder, and as it was the animal's foot barely missed the watch. Many new subscribers arc being added to the Review list these days. Talking about weather, did you ever see anything to beat the kind we have been having the past few weeks for this time of year? Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wolf and wife of Salem are in the city visit ing at the home of-Mrs. J. B. Campbell, sister of the former. Rev. J. G. Crouch of Philadel phia will preach in the Methodist church Sunday morning and Bish op L. B. Wilson in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Greene, who went with her daughter, Jennie, to their country home on the Cowlitz, last week, returned this week, Miss Jennie remaining on the farm for the winter. The phantom party on skates at the St. Johns rink lait night was a well patronized and successful af fair. The management is sparing no pains or expense to make these special events enjoyable. The county authorities arc im proving the county road at Rich mond street by the application of a thick layer of gravel. This act will be greatly appreciated by all horsemen who travel this route. Rev. J. R. Knodell, assistant superintendent of the Anti-saloon League of California, an eloquent man, will deliver his great lecture, "The Liquor Traffic a Crime," at Bickncr's hall, Sunday, November 17 , at 3 p. ni. There's a number of other berries on the bunches of all sizes, from the blossom to the full grown berry. A. II. McKcrn, an old Albia, la. friend of the Review man made short call at this office yesterday. He was attracted to our office by photograph of the old fire engine we used to cliasc alter and was sur prised to find an old Hawkeye till! cum out Here, i lie two young bucks had not seen each other for 30 years or more, and they arc now both urandfnthers. Mr. McKcrn's son accompanied him. Miss Ryan of the Peninsula bank returned Wednesday evening of last week from a visit of several weeks nt her old home in Saginaw, Mich. Miss Ryan reports n most delightful time with her old friends and relatives nud says the time was too short and that she was really loath to part with them when the tune came for her return. She also said times were good there and everybody seemed prosperous but there is no place quite so good as St. Johns after all and sue was lappy to be home again, Prank Gregory, an old Hoodriv- erite, who is now operating as (lis trict manager (or the 'lampico Fruit company with headquarters at LaGrand, Oregon, was a visitor at this office Wednesday. This company has a large tract of laud in Mexico especially adapted to the growing of bananas, aud it is Mr. Gregory's business to dispose of this land improved and set to ban aims, i'ratiK ts a rusuer ami wains to secure some good solicitors to help him cover the field, He will move his headquarters to Portland or St. Johns in the near future. Through a misunderstanding we were informed last week that the Pythian sisters would meet Wed nesday nights hereafter, but the good ladies evidently made it warm for the recalcitrant brother knight, and he came with profuse apologies and made arrangements for the sisters to meet as usual Tuesday evening in Odd Fellows hall. We hereby aud hereon transmit his apologies to the sisters and express the hope that our announcement of ast week did not prevent any of them from enjoying their fine social sessions. When you go to Portland from now uutii Monday, ask for a trans fer to the Washington street line and run up to Sixth and Washing ton and see the prettiest display ot apples the eyes of man ever beheld. It is tue exhibit piaceu mere by Messrs. Wilson and Shepard, two of Hood River's most rampant pomological warhorses. Mr. Shep ard is the proprietor of Better Fruit the best horticultural magazine yet, and Mr. Wilson, well, he just boosts Hood River apples for the love of it. He has the best there is aud knows it, and it makes him laugh and grow fat just to tell about them. Now, don't forget to see this shqw or you will regret it. Public Notice.
