Bennett of the St. Johns meat market in forms us that he has decided to take off his delivery wagon, sell his meats for cash and give to his patrons the benefit of this saving in expenses. He will have something further to say oh this subject. Dick Shepard returned Tuesday from his visit to Grand Rapids, Mich. He speaks very highly of the enterprising spirit and progress iveness manifested by the people of his old home. There has been a wonderful improvement in the city. Not so great as there has been here and in Portland, but great, nevertheless. He says there is no fruit there this year though. A yellow borer has killed nearly every peach tree in that great peach section, and the trees that escaped the worms were killed by the late frosts. Consequently they are peachless this season, Dick spent a delightful week at Saugatuck, , one ot .Michigan s most lovely sum j mer resorts, and he, with some ; other Michigauders made the voy ! age of their lives in a new launch 1 40 miles or more across and up one 1 of the rivers. Joseph llickner, wife and daugh ter Alda, who are well rembeied by St. Johns people have left Ashland temporarily, and have bought a home in Oswego, where .Mr. Hick ner's relatives reside. Word was received later that the child died Tuesday forenoon. A long lease has been granted the Western Coocroge company on 17 acres near the drydock. 1 lie deal was negotiated by Iv. S. Brink left this week to at tend 11 grand lodge convention to be held at Norfolk, V11., as a delegate from the city. On his return lie will bring Mrs. Brink's mother from Kansas for a visit. Mr. Brink's sister from Clatskania is here vis iting Mrs. Brink. J. P. Wrinkle and family return ed from Ocean Park and Long Heach last I'riday night after sev eral days of delightful outing. They report fishing of all kinds good, particularly fishing for crabs. One morning iu particular when they took iu 32 fine crabs out of old briny. The weather was propitious during the entire visit. W. K. Byerlee, who has been falling timber for Porter Bros. in Washington, opposite Viento, be came a little too energetic, and iu clearing the brush to make a cut slashed through a limb and into his left foot about a week ago. He has been going on three legs since and came down to sympathize with his mother over Sunday. Ivlscwhere iu this issue will be found an advertisement of the Mult nomah county fair. St. Johns has been designated as one district iu lie voting contest for the Queen of the Carnival. Our ixrople should decide upon some certain young lady and combine all their torces up on this one individual and boost the balloting. It would be a big red leather iu the hat of bt. Johns if we were able to send one of our queens to grace the central iwiiit of honor iu the carnival. Will Buck, brother of Mrs. S. C. Smith of North Albina, who is one of Walla Walla's fly cops was a visitor in bt. Johns 1 uesday. Will and the writer "bucked ties" to gether ten years ago for the Daven jwrt Bros, at Hood Kiver. we would hardly have known him. He has grown to the proportions of a typical metropolitan policeman. Tuesday as we were waiting for the ferry boat to start we were watching some youngsters of ages running from eight or ten to 60 fishing for croppies from a scow alongside the toat. One ot the youngest, Freddie Ivvaus lost his balance and fell into the water. lie plunked right down, but was under only a second, and as his companions were jumping sideways 111 their excitement r reddle pulled the water out of his mouth and coolly said "I can swim," and he did, around to the side where one of the older toys helped him on deck again. J. T. Saylor of The Dalles, gen- eral foreman of construction of the Great Southern, south of that city, was iu bt. Johns Wednesday and made this office a pleasant visit. Railroaders are always welcome here. After 21 years iu the ser vice, we know how to sympathize with them, Mr. Saylor is an old friend of our townsman, S. C. Nor ton, and they were fellow work men on the N. P. 15 years ago. Wednesday was the first time these old cronies had met since that time. I)., which conveyed the sad informa tion that his nephew, Alviu Albert- sou, about 20 years ol age, while returning from a chicken limit was instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. The young man was riding iu the rear seat of a hack with his loaded gun, which sliiicd iu some manner and both barrels were discharged striking bun 111 the head. 1 he mother of the lad, Mr. Peterson's sister, is iu very ioor health and the shock caused by her son's death gives great uneasiness to the relatives for her welfare. Mrs. Zoe Poulson and her two sous returned to their home iu Tur ner, Mich., Wednesday after a visit of several weeks with Mrs. Poulsoti's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P, W. Iliniiian. Mr. Hiumaii hoes to prevail uikhi Mrs. Poulson and another daughter to come to St. Johns to live soon. Mrs. Poulsoti's husband has been for u long term of years a prominent instructor iu tlie 1 timer educational institutions and would be a good ad litiou to our force here.
