Thorndyke spent several days at Seaside the past week. While there he gathered some inter esting data for a good bear story and incidentally enjoyed the fresh sea breeze. Judge L. A. I.oomis, from Ilwnco, Wush., and I. II. Ilowertou of Portland, were guests of the fam ilies of Wallace Glover and W. L. Thorndyke, both of Chicago street, 011 Monday evening. One of the largest trees iu the state of Oregon is to be found at Whltwood court. Measurement recently taken showed the tree to be 32 feet iu circumference nnd several hundred feet high. The M. L. Holbrook business block on Charleston and Jersey streets is how about ready for occu pancy. I he rooms are large and commodious and will make excel lent quarters for mercantile firms. John J. Smith of Priueville.Ore., is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Hoover this week. Mr. Smith was formerly county clerk of Crook county for a number of years. He expects to locate here if a suitable opening occurs. Hon. James R. Garfield, secretary- of the interior, and nartv. will spend Saturday, July 13, iu Port- laud. They will be guests of Dr. Henrv Waldo Coe for a drive over the city and luncheon at his resi dence and for a banquet at the Commercial club in the evening. A. W. Sigelbotie, advertising agent for C. A. Hibbard & Co,, of Colorado Springs, with two or three Portland business men called on Ed L. Stockton Monday evening. Mr. Sigelbotie is an old friend of Mr. Stockton, who was formerly an employe of Hibbard & Co. Mr. Stockton's visitors propose to open up a first class dry goods store in St. Johns in the near future and have several locations in view. W. A. Beard, chairman of the executive committee, has favored us with a copy of the official call for the fifteenth National Congress to be held in Sacramento, Cat., Sept. 2 to 7. There will be held at the same time the Sacramento Inter state fair, and the California state fair will follow immediately after, owning on the 7th, These occa sions will be of interest to all at tendants and if making the trip at that time our people will do well to visit them. The morning subjects "Be Ye Holy," All are welcome. Rev. Chester Paul Gates, pastor. Harry Mansfield and Geo, Sim mons did a gracious act the other morning. They swept the dirt from the street in front of tlitir respective whisker studio and confectionery store, giving their places a very neat appearance. Keep it tip, boys; let us get up a revival and convert the entire street. Charlie Leland, n i.-year-old lad, was down at Stewart's station deliv ering vegetables about to o'clock on Wednesday morning, and as he started the horse the wheel struck a stump and frightened the animal. The horse started to run and went over a little knoll, throwing the boy out 011 the ground. He struck 011 his head cutting a frightful gash iu the back of his head, bruising his arm and jarring him up badly. The little fellow was taken to the home of his grandparents, Mr. mid Mrs. G. Ward on Jersey street north of the postoffice. where a physician was called and his wounds attended to. The physician said that had the lad fallen on hard ground instead nt 011 the soft dirt his injuries would most certainly have proven fatal, but as it was the boy would be able to be up again iu a few days.
