NEW CITY HALLN0W OCCUPIED
City Fathers Met for the First Time Tuesday Evening in its
New Magnificent Quarters
the fire department, nviunasium.etc.
1 he city fathers met in their new architectural beauty unsurpassed banquet hall, assembly room for
tepee tor me urst time last 1 uesday by nuy municipal mtiiuings in any
evening. It is n superb structure, city the size of St. Johns anywhere
nud one of which the city may well in the state,
be proud, regardless of whatever The interior of the structure is in
expense may have been incurred keeping with the outer appearance.
11 its erection, and notwithstanding
the many heart burnings which we
understand discussions of the var
ious features of the building and
different stages in its construction
have occasioned.
Many of our readers arc not so
fortunate as to be in 11 position to
visit our city halt, and for the ben
efit of these nud others we will in
dulge in n brief description of the
structure nud promise our readers
a fuller history nud good illustra
tion in the near future.
The building is located on the
fiatiron block between Ihirliugtou,
Philadelphia and Hayes streets fac
ing the east, the rear overlooking
the historic Willamette river; is
built of brick with concrete base
ment, trimmed with artificial stone
and roofed with corrugated iron.
The building throughout is finished
with red and yellow fir finished in
oil with natural color of the wood,
the work being done in a most ex
cellent manner, presenting a fine
glossy surface. The council chain
her, entrance stairways nud hall
ways arc wainscoted to a height of
four feet, the remainder of these
rooms, the jury nud committee
rooms nud the offices on the first
floor being plastered with the ada
mant plaster which is noted fur its
indestructibility.
The building is 45x71 feet, two
stories nud basement. In tin. base
ment will be found the fire depart
ment room 18x45, boiler room for
the heating plant, space for is cell
cages, toilet nud vault for the old
records.

'1 he second fioor contains the
council chamber, a splendid hall
capable of seating about 500 people,
is 38x41, and has three large com
mittee or jury rooms, toilet for
ladies and gentlemen, the entire
suite being finished in an excellent
manner. All of the.se rooms are
electric lighted and have large win
dows on nit exposetl sides giving
our city officials good light night
and day. The council chamber
has been adorned with a splendid
massive table for the use of the
municipal solous, but is yet lacking
in upholstered fiirnituic to accom
modate their critics who will drop
in from time to time. This defect
will be remedied soon. There is as
yet no staff from which to swing
"Old Glory" to the breeze, but the
council adopted measures nt the
meeting which will supply this
desirable ornament.
As n whole, we may jwlut witli
pride to this structure as an indica
tion of the progressive spirit of St.
Johns, for it is 11 building that will
supply our needs when St. Julius
has long passed the 10,000 mark
in the growth of her imputation.

BIG FOUNDRY
Columbia Engineering Works
to Locate Near Linnton.
The latest development in an in
dustrial way is the proposed remov
al of the immense Columbia Kngiu
eeriug Works, now located at Tenth
and Johnson streets, Portland, to a
tract of land recently acquired by
this company on the water front
south of I.inntoii. We understand
the tract purchased contains about
175 acres, and that their plant
which now occupies a whole block
will be materially increased. The
coining of this huge industrial
plant cannot help but be of great
advantage to St. Johns. Located
as it will be almost directly opposite
our city it will furnish remunera
tive employment to many of our
citizens, and for many more yet to
come.

We have undertaken the task of
doubling our list in the next two
mouths and take this method of
introducing the paper into the var
ious homes. As an advertising
medium from now on it cannot be
beaten. No better scheme could be
conceived of to attract buyers. A
business man cannot go wrong by
accepting this proposition. Better
reserve your space at once as we
have but a limited amount yet to
dispose of. Remember this fact
and act accordingly.

PACKING PLANT

in Full Blast
The new million dollar plant be
ing put in on the peninsula by
Swift & Co., packers, and which
s to be oieratcd under the name of
the Union Meat Co., will be of
great interest to St. Johns, for
there will be 3000 employes engaged
at work there when fully estab
lished, aud many of these men will
naturally make their homes in St.
Johns.
It is exacted that the plant will
be in operation within 18 mouths.
work was begun some two weeks
ago and will be crowded to comple
tion as rapidly as possible. Swift
& Co, will concentrate all their
holdings in this .plant aud their
yards at North Portland will be
abandoned as will the slaughtering
pens at Troutdale. The otwratives
at these places will remove to the
new location aud such others added
as the business requires.
The New Ferry.
An excellent cut of the new ferry
about to be launched by the St.
Johns Perry Co. appeared in last
Suuday's Journal. The installa
tion of the new ferry will le of
great benefit to St. Johns. Many
farmers residing in the fertile valley
just west of Whitwood Court will
be glad of the opportunity now
presented of bringing their produce
to the St. Johns markets instead of
being compelled to make the long
Haul to Portland, as lias heretofore
been the case. It will also greatly
facilitate travel between the two
shores. The coming of the new
ferry will be gratifying to all.
Since the above was in type the
ferry has been launched.
