The Willamette isstill banks full, the guage at Portland recording it as 20 feet above the low water mark. The weather man says it will begin falling today. 1 he recent moist weather made everybody forget about the dust nuisance. If anything is going to be done towards sprinkling or oil iug the streets it should be taken up at once. One of the hardest and heaviest rains of the season fell Tuesday afternoon. It was not local, but extended to the eastwatd giving the wheat fields n good soaking that will insure a bountiful harvest. The shower was probably among the last of the season, and the dry season will soon be here witli its dust and kindred annoyances. 1 lie steam barge Jim Butler caught fire at the Linnton mill last Saturday, and in order to save the ship she was beached on this side of the river. The lite boat from Portland, a p.issiug river steamer ami the crews in the mills were engaged in preventing 11 spread of the tlanics. 1 lie boat was pumpal out and floated .Sunday. At their meeting last Monday night the local lodge of Odd Fel lows closed 11 deal with Pascal Hill whe eby they became the owner of the west half of lots 10 and 17, block 3, Hill's addition. These lots nre purchased as a site for a new hall to be erected by the Order in the near future, and face on Fes svuden street. It is Mr. Hill's intention to build in conjunction with the lodge, and the result will be 11 sightly block for the north end After 11 series of races lctwccu the Telephone nnd Chas. R. Sau cer the lormer Has been declared the fastest boat, and now carries the broom 011 her jack staff. Prom now 011 the Spencer will not at tempt anything in the speed line beyond making schedule time. Her officers say racing is expensive and wiat only a few minutes are gained between here and Vancouver, but the real reason is that on two occa sions lately the Telephone cut rings around the passenger boat before the first stop was made. The Spen cer is a pleasant boat to travel on, however. A well known contractor and builder last Monday called the at tention of The Review to a botch job of plumbing on a recently built house, and asked that publicity be given the fact that this kind of work is a regular thing 111 St. Johns. While 1 he Review is not an inspec tor of plumbing, nor does it make a practice of sticking its nose into other people's business, it has re peatedly called the attention of the council to this inferior plumbing. It will only be when an epidemic results from the unsanitary condi tion of the homes where this botch work has been done that stringent rules will be adopted governing this class of work. Roseburg Spokesman: All the world knocks a knocker. This in creases the din of the anvil chorus. Don't even knock a knocker; don't listen to him. Where there is 110 ear, there no sound is. 1 lie knock er will not knock long where no appreciation is shown. Knock not, least ye be knocked. We can utid something to knock in everyone and everyone can find something to knock in us. Be charitable to others and you will show the truest character toward yourself. Knock tug is the sign of envy. Ihe knocker envies his stronger brother, so he takes out his little hammer and furtively, but none the less irritatingly taps him. Knocking is a bad habit. Break it. Don't lose your friends because you have the knocking habit. Don't lose your individuality by joining the hopeless, dyspeptic ranks of self- confessed failures, the chronic knockers. The wise man has no use for a hammer. Throw yours away and you will gain friends and happiuess. gardens finer. and roses never Miss Barbara Hughes is very ill with pneumonia. The eariciiters and cement work ers are finishing up their contracts on the new city hull, and the paint ers are at work on the upper floor. The building will probably be ready for occupancy in about ten days or two weeks. I lie manner in which the market is keeping up horses is very pleasant to the owners of good ani mals. One of the features of Portland's celebration on the Fourth of July will be the illumination of the snow clad peaks of Hood, Helens and dams. In addition to the regular display at the exposition grounds it is proposed to set off fireworks 011 the summits of the peaks that eau be seen from Portland. The illuminations will nil be fired at one time, and the sight will prove quite an attraction in itself. As the result of the price of ted and yellow fir logs falling from $12 and $13 per thousand to $8 and 9 ninety per cent of the lumber camps along the Columbia river will shut down until October 1 next. Over 600 men will be thrown out of work. The loggers say they have been obliged to pay their men from f 3 to $5 jier day, and with logs at present prices there is 110 money in continuing work. It is not probable that St. Johns will lie represented in the rose pa rade in Portland next week. An effort was made in this Hue, but when the cost was ascertained it was considered advisable to drop the matter. Out who knows says it will cost anywhere from $ 100 to 500 to decorate uu automobile mid carry out the program as it should be. 1 his sum was considered too large to squander, and so St. Johns will le without representation. F.d Davey, one of the Tri-City League umpires, and who held the indicator at the double header here last Sunday, is creating all kinds of j trouble for the semi-professional i clubs by gathering up players for the purpose of placing a team at Stevenson, Wash. It is said he has already secured Adams, form erly left fielder of the local club, nnd Iinirick of the Trunks, nnd is negotiating for players on several t other teams. If Mr. Davey's man-j agemeut of a club is on a par with his umpiring the lumpers to the Stevenson club are going to have n I hard row to hoe. It is the purpose of the Tri-City league officers to 1 blacklist all players who violate the terms of their contract. While wages are high there are more than enough men to fill all the places. Again, there is a dearth of building material. As soon as a car load or several car loads of building material arrives enough men ar put at work to use it all up in a couple of days. Then comes a long, tedious wait until the next lot is available, The unset tled condition of the labor market deters many from commencing building operations. "Any me chanic," said the man, "can make more money anywhere outside of San Francisco at a couple of dollars a day less than he receives there." r Bonham-Currier Because of continued requests for fashion sheets and patterns we concluded to place a line in our branch store at 107 S.
