Kvery one of the 900 people who
witnessed Sunday's game between
the Portland Hrcwcrs and the St.
Johns nine received their money's
wortli and plenty of interest. The
lowering skies of midday deterred
many from being present, but the
elements did not interfere with the
game. The ruins of the week left
the grounds in n condition not any
too good for playing, but this was
remedied by n liberal application of
saw dust along the base lines and
in the diamond. While everything
was against fast ball both nines put
up a game that hell the crowd
until the last man wan out.
The batteries of both teams did
fine work considering the s'ippcry
condition of the ground. Pender,
the Drawers left handed pitcher,
passed four men, three of them
being in the third Inning, and forc
ing in u run. Moore, of the locals,
issued only one pass to first, and
allowed only three safe hits.

Relief from Rheumatic Pains.
"I suffered with rheumatism for
over two years," says Mr. Holland
Curry, a patrolman, of Key West,
Fla. "Sometimes it settled in my
knees and lamed me so I could
hardly walk, at other times it
would be iu my feet and hands so
I was incapacitated for duty, One
night when I was in severe pain
and lame from it my wife went to
the drug store here and came back
1 with a bottle ot Chamberlain's
, Pain Balm. I was rubbed with it
l and found the pain had nearly gone
, duriug the night. I kept on using
' it for a little more than two weeks
and found that it drove the rheum
atism away. I have not had any
trouble from that diseise lor over
three months." ' For sale by St.

favorite with the fans. His slide

the local catcher, but fell from hi:

The mlxup between Wood and

Clark Moore played first base

one of the best amateurs iu the

Rain interfered with the finishing

The play is improving all along

Mr. Thatcher and Mr. Snencer

conditions. The matter of the
franchise was referred to City
Attorney Greene, and will be
brought up at the next regular,

James Crouchley had an uppllca-'
tlon for a criiiit to erect a building
at the rear of his plumbing shop
(opposite the postolhce) said build
ing to be 20x14 fcet iu si.e, and
covered with galvanized iron. This
matter drew much discussion, its
to grant .such a permit was clearly ,
against ordinance 63. The council, '
realizing that thete was need of
such n building, gave Mr. Crouch
ley the icriuit with the proviso that
the building be attached to the
pieseut building and not erected as 1
a new building. J
An application to erect an "en-:
closed porch" upon lot 3, block 30, '
James Johns addition, was received
from Messrs. Hlack it Kerr. The
building was already completed, but
the application although endorsed i
by the lire commission, was turned
down by a vote of six to one.

The matter was placed Iu the hands
of the street committee.
Die matter of giving the termin
ation of Charleston street, 11 tract
of laud 60x200 feet, about 12,000
square feet to the Marine Iron
works was brought up. As a re
monstrance had previously been
filed the matter was forced to rest
for one month.
C. I. Goodrich, as administrator
of the estate of the late W. W.
Goodrich, presented a claim for
work done upon Catliu, Lively,
Salem and l.eavitt streets amount
ing to 1270.57. These streets have
Ihx'U completed but the late engin

his services. 1 lie matter was
turned over to the finance commit
