FRIDAY, APRIL, 5, "J0"' Now net down to pull for St. Johns. business mid There is nothing in tlic world jicoplc admire more than a good loser. Iforgct your differences of opinion nnd see how lmrd you enn boost for St. Johns. A majority of the candidates, csjiecially those who were in the running, profiting hy the example net hy Senator lloiirue in his cam paign la;t .Mimmer .saw that the lcople were informed of their can didacy by a liberal use of printers' ink. A couple of plunders in Portland who have an idea that something has been doing anions the ofTicials in the Rose City during recent years have volunteered to contrib ute $50,000 towards a fund to be raised to hire Ileuey to probe into municipal affairs. The idea' The result of Monday's munici pal election will cause new fuces to replace the old ones in the city's of ficial roster. Mayor Hinmati will vacate his chair in favor of K. C. Kouch. The new mayor-elect is a good business man, of a jovial und whole hearted disposition and is well liked by all. We believe the welfare of the city will be well look ed after during bis administration. A. M. Ksson, a rising young man, has been elected to the recordership to replace W. I. Thomdyke. Mr. Ksson is a bright young man, am bitious and well fitted to assume the duties that usually falls to the re corder's lot. He will no doubt moke it careful and painstaking official, (leo. M. Hall, who bus been re elected city treasurer, is a thor oughly honest man. Hverybody knows George Hall and everybody likes him. Always courteous and obliging, he will continue to serve the jeop!e faithfully and carefully. The new councilnieii elected K. T. I.eggett, Clms. I.indquist mid J. R. Jobes arc representative citizens and have the welfare of the city at heart. The former two have been in the harness before. Their former exerience will no doubt be of value and the people know just what to cxeet at their hands. Mr. Jobcs is an untried element, but he bus promised to do the very best he knows how, so the public can look for him to give a good account of himself and serve the city well. The coiiiicilinen re-elected W. H. Kinir. I K. Walker. W. W. Raser and S. I.. Dobic are- nil business men. Tlw record tliev have made during tlie present administration was well known. Their acts on nil important measures was made pub lie and the coplc knew just where tliey stood. 1 lie result ot tlie elec tion proves conclusively that a Iti the construction of the new city council the familiar figures of S. C. Norton and H. S. Hewitt will not be found in their accus tomed places in the council chamber. Both' are gentlemen of wide experi ence, well versed in the affairs of city government and will be missed i when the new council convenes. 1 Hoth were honest and courageous 'and stood unswervingly by their convictions no matter how strong the opposition. They did their duty ns they saw it nnd stood by 1 their guns. They had no use for I graft or grafters, and ever had the welfare of the city at heart. While their actions as the result shows did not meet witli popular favor or else their positions were misunderstood I by the voters, they were honest in their purjwsc and took great pride in economically transacting the af fairs tlint enmc before council, nnd they never broke faith with the , people. In retiring to private life they have the satisfaction of know ing that they did their duty well. P. S. Hredeen was the only mem ber of council who did not seek re election. One year of strenuous life was enough for one time at least. W. h. Thorndyke who retires ns city recorder has also made n good record. He took much pride in , keeping his books and records in ship shape no matter how much time was required to accomplish that end. He was ever courteous and obliging and treated all alike. . P. W. Illiiinan made a good, lion , est mayor, and during his adiiiinis , trillion made 11 clean record through out, nnd lias 110 bad actions to regret. A. hustlers were in St. Johns last Friday soliciting subscription's for their building fund, and met with a generous re sponse from many citizens. The oldest inhabitant declares the present strip of disagreeable weather is something unheard of during their residence in the coun try. Of late the gloom has settled down in chunks. The recently inaugurated Sun lay mail is more than a convenience. Now let us try for a telegraph ofTicc. There are very few places in this country of 4000 people with out this convenience. We learn that Jos. Hickner, who is mining in the southern part of the state, is meeting with fair suc cess, and has n claim that promises to develop into n paying proposi tion. His many friends will be pleased to hear of his good fortune. As a mark of respect to the mem ory of the late H. W. Goodc, who died nt Atlantic City on Easter Sunday, the Portland electric lines stopped their cars for ten minutes during the time the funeral services were held in Chicago Mr. Goodc was president of the company. Potter & Goold, the hardware men, after a week's hard work, have succeeded in moving their large stock and placing it upon the shelves in the Hickner building, nnd arc now prepared to attend to the wants of their customers and give them better satisfaction than ever. With ample floor, shelf and storage space the pioneer hardware firm is now able to carry a stock that will be second to none in the county. Call nnd see them in their i.c.v quarters. oooo Here It Is! First Addition to Linnton! ome and let us show you the best money making proposition on the banks of the Willamette River within a dozen miles of Portland. Something that is not going to be a good buy a yenr hence, but is a good investment right now. Something that is right on the line of the electric road now building to Linnton, and which will double in value within a year. Linnton has the deepest water to be found along the river. Everybody knows what this means. In a very short time it will be occupied by busy factories. Easy Payments! Any one purchasing one of these lots not only gets it at n low price, but on the easy payment plan. Pay ten per cent of the purchase price down and the balance at $5 per month. Lots at $,o, $50, $60, $80 and $100. These prices will not last long. Come and make your selection before too many arc sold. SecC. I1'. .Hunker, 514 Cliambe: of Commerce, Port land, Ore.; A. A.
