The first warm days of spring bring with them n desire to get out and enjoy the exhilarating nir and sunshine. Children that have been housed up all winter are brought out and you wonder where they all came from. The heavy winter clothing is thrown aside and many shed their liauuels. I lien a cold wave comes and teople say that grip is epidemic. Colds at this season are even more dangerous than in mid' winter, as there is much more danger of pneumonia. Take Ch imberlaiu s Cough Kent- edy, however, nud you will have nothing to fear. It always cures, and we have never known a cold to result in pneumonia when it was used. It is pleasant and safe to take. Children like it. For sale I by St. Johns Drug Store. NOTICE OF SALE. To whom It amy concern: I. Oni. M. Hall. City Treasurer of St. I folniN. DICKSON Woodlawn 505 A BASEBALL STORY. The Pleturss of Pitcher That Were on Exhibition. Dad Clark, once a pitcher of tho New York club, who was perhaps the most unconscious humorist tho game has ever known, could bo made to believe the tallest story ever told, provided the teller kept n ecrious face, and this sublime faith of Clark's caused him to bo "stung" on many occasions, Uno of the most notablo cased wherein Dad got "stung" happened one morning when that genial soul and prince of good fellows, Pnrko Wilson, tho New York catcher at that time, came hurriedly into tho citibhouso just when tho fellows were preparing to don their baseball clothes for morning prnctico and excitedly exclaimed: "Sny, men, what do you think? As I cnino to the park this morning I walked by Sicgcl, Cooper & Lo.'b plnco and saw a big crowd gathered it 1 11 I aooui incir inrgcsi biiow winnow. "Getting curious myself, I went up to sco what the trouble won, and wunt do you imagino caused tho ulrcct to become blockaded? Why, nothing moro than this they hnvo tho cntiro window filled with canned goods, nnd on each can is tho pic- turo of Dad Clark l" shouted Parke. "What!" shrieked Dad ns ho be- can pulling on his street clothes, "Mc pictcr on cans in Sicgcl-Coop-cr'o window? A relie of tho old days, probably uot much moro than two centuriee ago, before little girls begun to call tlieir toy bubiea "dolls" instead of "puppets" or "poppets," is to be found in "pretty poppet," a term of emicariiii'tit still sometimes heard. No doubt "poiwy wonay" is simply an improved version of this. 'Tup- pet is descended, or course, from tho French "poupco" and tho Lat in "pupa," a littlo girl or doll, from both of which huvu como other Kng lish words. Chaniln th Tcpai. Pink topazes and white sapphires ura imitated to perfection aud paaa- ed oil successfully as tho genuine stoues. The amounts paid for somt of them aro considerable, varying accordiug to also and quality. The stones aro imitated by the aid of heat and require very careful ma nipulation. The pink topaz is made by heating a yellow topaz, which is not of groat value, to u certain tern- era turo, wheu it gradually turns a very pleasing pink or dedicate rose color. Tho Saxon topaz and a I very palo sapphire can bo made per fectly white, ao as to resemble dia monds, but are moro often passed oil as a whito sapnhiro. which is also of much value. A Brazilian to paz by tho samo method can be mudo to imitate a very fine ruby. ACME DRAMATIC GO, Organization That Should Be En couraged by St. Johniles. The Acme Dramatic Co., which gives a show in Bickner's hall every Monday evening, is an organ ization that deserves a liberal pa tronagc. The entertainments they have been putting on the boards are highly interesting and well execut ed. The play last Monday evening entitled "Facing the Music," was a pleasing one. The actors were proficient, nud proved themselves to be a cast of no mean order. It was the first time this play had been rendered on the Pacific coast, the royalty on the comedy being so high that only companies playing in a thickly populated state can aflord to put it on the boards, but local dramatic organizations arc permitted to use it without cost. It is a humorous farce comedy and was thoroughly enjoyed by the small audience present. It you desire to spend a pleasant evening next Monday, take in the Play nt Bickner's hall, nnd you will be agreeably surprised at the enter tainment produced.
