That work is to be rushed on the
railroad cut across the jcninsula
may be inferred from the fact that
during the first of (he week a couple
of switch engines were landed 011
the temporary track constructed for
the work trains by the contractors.
The engines were taken up the hill
from the water front, via balem,
Edison and Richmond streets, and
thence to the right of way over the
electric line. The additional motive
power will no doubt be the means
of putting and keeping a large force
of men employed continuously for
the next year. 1 here is an im
mense amount of dirt to be moved,
but the huge steam shovel with its
dipper capable of handling five
yards of dirt on each trip it makes
to the cars, together with the hy
draulic ram, will rush work on
both ends of the itnmeuse cut.

of yours in last week's Review call-

of the Russian thistle is not de
served. But are you acquainted
with the Russian thistle? They
are something fierce. Hurled along
by one of those prairie zephyrs they
cut run right away from a railroad
train. Once while driving from
one town to another a big wind set
these thistles agoing ucross the
country so that it was impossible to
irocced. i lie team would not face
them, and I was compelled to get
out of the buggy and unhitch the
horses and turn them loose and
camp for the night on the prairie.
1 o show you how these tliistlrs
travel: Several fellows near Fargo,
N. D,, got hold of one about as big
as a load of hay and tied a tag 011
it and turned the thing loose. The
next day they got a message from
Yankton, S. D., 300 miles away,
saying that the Dig thistle hud
assed through that town and was
still going south. At present these
thistles are used as feed lor sheep
and arc said to be good fodder."
