Passes Away at His Home In This
City Sunday Atomlng.
As the result of n bullet wound
in his stomach received during the
civil war, William Wordsworth
Goodrich passed peacefully to rest
at his home on Hurlington street

Having resided in our city for n
period of nearly three years, dur
ing which time he was actively in
terested in our municipal affairs,
his figure became familiar to all.
For the past year Mr. Goodrich
was city engineer, and many of
St. Johns' finely graded streets are
silent testimonials of his skill in
street grading. The city hull now
under course of construction was
designed by him, nnd as long as he
was able to be about, he watched
and supervised its erection with 11
careful eye.
Captain Goodrich was a man of
ability. Endowed with an intel
lect that was exceedingly bright he
was nil honor to his nrofesslott. lit-

member of 110 church or christian
organization, yet he constructed
69 church edifices. He was chari
tably inclined nnd did much to re
lieve the distress and suffering of
mankind. While he bad his faults

Funeral services were held nt the
Elks' Temple. Portland. Tuesday
afternoon at 1:30. The ceremony
was conducted by the Elks, accord
ing to the rites of the order. Rev.

appropriate sermon over the re
mains. Interment took place in the
Rivervicw cemetery.

Capt. Goodrich was not n local
character, but was known through
out the United States. He was a
imminent figure in the construction
of the famous Monitor during the
Rebellion, and laid down the old
"cheese box" from the model and
superintended her construction at

Capt. Goodiich was born in the
year 1841, and began life as a civil
engiueer. Alter his discharge from
the army service he took up archi
tecture, which witli engineering he
followed until the end of life. He
resided for several years in New
York city, Later he moved to
Denver, Col., where he became as
sociated with the engineering of the
Oregon Short Line from Salt Lake
to Portland. Afterward he resided
in Doise, Idaho, for some time. He
was instructor in civil engineering
at Uerkeley, Cal,: New Orleans,
La., and Iiultimore, Md. I,ater he
moved to I.os Angeles, Cal., then
to Sail Luis Obisito, then to Sail
ose, and then to Portland and fi
nally to St. Johns.
Capt. Goodrich was a nephew of
General Lafayette, of Revolution
ary war fame; a relative of Admi
ral Goodrich, and a desceudeut of
William Wordsworth, the English
poet, and after whom he was named.
He was a personal friend of Presi
dent Lincoln and was intimately ac
quainted with many of the promi
nent men of the present day in the
affairs of the nation.
Like his ancestor Capt. Goodrich
composed a number of poems and
was an able contributor to numer-
