Hood, and plainly seen from St. Johns lust Monday morning, reminded many of our residents of their experience in the regions of the eastward. Aldersou, pastor of the Baptist church is soliciting sub scriptions to the building fund for the new church and is meeting with success, The church will be built on Chicago street on the lot owned by the congregation. It will cost S3, 500. Over 5 400 have already been subscribed. The roof on the new city hall is nearly finished and with another week of fair weather, the building will be turned over for the inside work. The roof of the city hall is intended to be 11 lasting one. On top of the rafters sealed boarding will be used. Then a coat of heavy felt paper will be laid, and tin, painted 011 both sides will furnish the outside covering. Clarence Shepard, who left here last fall for his old home in Iowa, returned to St. Johns Monday morn ing, and will make this his perma nent home. Two brothers and their families will follow him in about a mouth. Commenting 011 the arrival of his brother "Dick" Shepard said: "When the whole Shepard family arrives Oregon will never go Democratic." , Mr. R. T. Sprague and Miss Edith Rice were quietly married at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Rice, 011 South Jersey street, at high noon Wed nesday, January oth. Rev. John Glenn of Portland erforiucd the ceremony. Only the immediate friends of the contracting parties were present. A sumptuous wed ding dinner was served after the vows had been taken. Any person holding one of these positions will find he has troubles enough without compounding them The street car company have had surveyors at work running lines and met clearing brush near the new Holbrook' addition where the route of the electric line is to be changed beginning at McKenua avenue and forming u loop to connect at the county road. The right of way parallels the Holbrook addition for some distance, and to accomodate it the building recently erected at the point where the car line crosses the comity road has been moved back by Contractor Gee. COUNCIL What Was Done t the Regular Meeting Tuesday Night On thestreugth of the publications in the Portland papers that it "had been arranged" to turn the fran chise asked by the Pacific States company over to them for ftoo a year for a period of twenty-one years, it was reported theie would be fish to fry at the meeting of th council Tuesday evening. The rumor proved to be n canard, and the session resembled a scene in Peaceful valley. Not a ripple ap pea red to mar the smoothness of the legislative water. All members were present at roll call, and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Is. A. Gee, contractor for the inproveinent of Leavitt street, was granted an extension of time for thirty days in which to complete his job. On account of his inability to se cure lumber, G. Hoffslraud asked for and was granted an extension ol time to complete the sidewalk he contracted to lay on West Charleston street. W. W. Goodrich was granted one and a half per cent of his commis sion for plans and specifications on tlie city Hall. 1 he recorder was instructed to draw 11 warrant for $300 on the city hall fund to pay the interest on tlie bonds for same. Several bills amounting to f 8O..S0 were allowed. The committee appointed to lo cate n dumping ground, repoited tliat a tract bad been selected near the liver, on Tacoma and Bur lington streets, wheie tin cans, ashes and other garbage could be dumped. On motion it was ordered that .1u me light be placed at Point View station, CONTRACT To Be Let for Building the Tureu tine Plant From a party who stands clone to those who in v interested in the pro ject we learn that the contract for the ttircutiiic and alcohol plant to be built on the opposite bank of the Willamette below the road house will be let next week. The plans and sjieclfkatinns were finished the first of this week and accepted yes terday. The plans call for a build ing 100x150 feet and two storiw. high. It is the intention to rush the work on the building as fast as possible in order to have it in read iness for the reception of tlie ma chinery now euroute from the east. AM.
