CHEAP FUEL
Likely fo Disappear When (ItcAleo
hoi Plant Starts.
When the turpentine and ntcohol
plant, soon to be built on the bank
of the Willamette opposite the citv
begins derations, cheap fuel in St
Johns will disappear.
Although it does not conic from
headquarters, vc have heard it said
that the new plant lias contractu'
for and will use nil the refuse htm
bcr of the mills, and even the saw
dust. This means that our People
.... , , , ,
win nave to uepcini on the ranchers
bringing in cord wood from the
hills across the river, or else use
coal from the mines in Wyomimr.
In the event of the disappearance
01 siau-woou it will not be lone; be
fore gas mains will be laid for the
purpose of supplying gas for cook
ing and heating purposes. Per
haps electriety will be cheap enough
so tnai me nousc wttc may prepare
me laiiiuy tucais uy us use.
Whatever happens it is not likelv
that any one will suffer or that there
will be any inconvenience to sienk
of. Wc have millions of cords of
firewood all around us. Hcsidcs
there are inexhaustible mines of
first class coal within i.so miles of
St. Johns. Then there is the fuel
oil. Well, wc will not begin to
worry at present.

ALCOHOL PLANT
Will He Built on (he Opposite Bank
of Riycr.
All doubt as to the erection of the
alcohol and turieutiue plant on the
banlcs ot the Willamette opposite
the city has been removed by the
fact that the syndicate who recently
purchased the sue are now in the
east buying the necessary machinery.
The plant will be an immense one
and will manufacture alcohol, tur
pentine and other products from the
refuse wood of the saw mills.
The company has one of the best
deep water frontages on the Will
amette, has ample capital to carry
on its business and promises to be a
valuable addition to the industries
of the city. We understand build
ing operations will begin as soon as
the weather settles and men and
materials can be secured.

may have a pleasant place where

maintaining and elevating society

We have many employes in our

Let us have the reading room so
