IMPRESSED
Willi What He Saw nt the Public
Schools.
l?d. Review ; I was very forcibly
impressed in a visit of two hours to
our public school, nud my concep
tion of educating the rising genera
tion was intensified, nvcry onecau-
not be n principal of an institution
of learning like this. Prof. Alder-
son must have acquired ability to
meet the requirements. Upon him
rests n grcnt responsibility in the
general management of such an in
stitution. Then the necessity of
competent teachers witli personal
individuality to care for their par
ticular department under the ccncrnl
direction and dictation of the prin
cipal. I was attracted by the stu
diousuess of the scholars and the
effort put forth by the teachers to
thoroughly rivet the lesson of the
text books on their minds. A sys
tem in one room in the History les
son was to have scholars draw a map
of the lesson. In another room the
teacher used the object lesson on cof
fee production by giving each pupil
grains of coffee to lie used in the il
lustration. In the primary department I was
much interested in the phonic drill
work, which is certainly an cmcicut
plan to lay a lasting foundation to
make the child independent in pro
nunciation. The physical drill to exercise the
entire body is of great advantage
when the miud has a tendency to
become weary. These exercises re
lease the mind and bring the mus
cles into action, thus preparing them
to take up the mental work again.
Another Wing that attracted my
attention was the unique system of
controlling over doo girls and boys
in the match from the rooms to the
separate basements, nud then to the
rooms, which I will not undertake
to describe, but if any one wants to
see 11 fine sight I would advise them
to view this drill and match. It
seemed almost (lerfeet to me.
1 heie is u special interest at pies-
cut centered in the graduating class
of the Hlh grade. It has 20 pupils
nud tvill graduate l-'eb. 1 next, nud
will take the state examination Jan.
2.t mid 25. This will eulatge the
high school to about ,o pupils. A
new system will be taken up in the
7th, Nth and otli grades, known as
depailmeiit work. In this system
the teachers htivcchurgcof the same
studies in nil tlnce grades. There
is not loom enough to take care of
all the pupils nt piesent, and it will
be necessary to tent one or two
rooms the first of the year. This
denotes giowth and demand.
I came away from the school with
greater admiration mid intensified
interest nud pride in the excellent
system that had been introduced and
maintained for the education of the
children. If any are disMed to
criticise or find fault with the school
or faculty it would be well for them
to visit nt id acquaint themselves
witli the above wotk. I hey will
110 doubt see many things in 11 dif
ferent light than they have hereto
fore. A VlSJTOU.
