Those who care to take the short walk out to the right of way of the Portland & Seattle railway can see the graders engaged in the prelim inary work of the big cut across the peninsula that will connect the two big bridges now building across the Columbia nnd Willamette rivers by railroad. The work of removing the stumps from the right of way began sev eral days ago, nud as soon ns room can bo made for litem a large force of men will Ik- employed. At a point near the dry dock scaffolding s being erected and an engine installed to be used in oper ating the hydraulic rams. By a change, of the grade of the roadbed the cut in the deepest part will bo 80 feet. This is ten feet less than originally planned. At the west end of the cut hydraulic rums will bo Used to do the exca vating, washing the earth down to the bank of the river to form the approach to the bridge. At the oast end of the cut steam shovels will bo Usui to do the excavating. Those steam shovels arc now on the way here, and would be 011 the ground now if the recent washouts on the railroads had not prevented delivery. As soon as the bridges arc com plete nnd the track laid there will be 15-miuute train service between Portland and Vancouver. Gaso line motors will be used. Stations will be installed near the dry dock nud Northern Hill.
