Orlando S. Mttrry shot and killed
Lincoln C. Whitney Monday morn
ing at 8 o'clock. Murray says Whit
ney betrayed his sister, Miss Marv
Murray, under promise of marriage
aim tnen retuscU to keep his word
and save her from imminent (lis
grace. I lie tragedy occurred at the
homeof Whitney's sister, Mrs. Anna
Porter, 360 IJast Harrison street
roruaiui. 1 tic stayer is at years
out, resides with his parents at I'm
vcrsuy rarK, niui is employed in tile
renlusuia lath mill. Whitney was
22 years old, and had resided at his
parents' home at Hubbard, Marion
county. The sister is 19 years of
age. After killing his sister s be
trayer, Murray ran to a car, boarded
it, went direct to the sheriff's office
and gave himself up.
I he tragedy followed an earnest
discussion ns to whether or not
Whitney should marry the sister.
Murray did all the talking. He
begged, coaxed, pleaded mid fin
ally threatened. Whitney was eva
sive until the very last. Murray
then drew a 38 caliber revolver and
fired three shots. One )euetrated
the head, another the tight breast
and n third the right side. Any
one of the shots would havcicsulled

The tragedy is a teculiarlv sad
one, in nMiitich ns the brother in his
endeavor to save his sister from dis
grace, brings more publicity mid
uotoiiety to the case than would
otherwise have been the result.
While the murdered one certainly
deserved to be punished the method
adopted was n rash one.
'1 he parents of the girl deserve
much sympathy in their great
trouble in their old age.
1 he outcome of the young man s
trial will be watched with interest
and is likely he will cscajK! with lit
tle or no punishment.

Assault and Battery.
G. V. Samberg was arrested last
Monday morning on n warrant
sworn out by W. G. Lytic. Sam-
burg is charged with abusing, strik
ing and beating his wife. The of
fense is alleged to have been com
mitted on the night of the 7th inst.
at the Samberg home on Hurling
ton street.
l'lie news of the aliened assault
caused considerable comment in the'
city and Samberg was roundly cen
sured. A reiMHt was to the effect
that Mrs. Samberg's face was badly
battered and one eye black nud blue
and bloodshot,

maud for lumber, this mill lies idle
and Umpire is ns dead as a keg of
nails. A lumber syndicate owns
practically the whole of the town
and there isnothing for sale. Prob
ably when this syndicate gets every
thing coopered up fast as they want
it Umpire will look up.

"Mnrshheld is 011 the mud (hits
of the inner harbor. The harbor is
uot;veryfcdecp and the little tub Al
liance runs ngrouud on the mud
neatly every time she makes the
trip. Uverything is overdone, but
it is the best town of the three.
"Real estate is high. It is not
within teach of the ordinary purse.
In fact you can buy Coos Hay prop
erty cheaer in Portland than you
can on the ground. The country
is very rough and hilly. There me
some fine valleys and splendid
farms. All the farmers go to mar
ket in gasoline launches. There are
very few farmers' teams seen in the
towns.
"When the bar and the haihor is
dredged out so that shipping will 1
not be hindered, a great deal of $
business will be done. To my mind :
Umpire is to be the town. It has 1
the right location. The reason that ,
no real estate is on the market mid 4
that the mills arc idle I could not as
certain. There is a good demand
for property and ienple looking for
investments are going in by the
hundred. Ilo.its bring the limit of
passengers. As to the much talked
of railroad I learned that ns yet no
right of way has been obtained.
Until something tangible develop
in the way of a railroad the country
will not develop. As I said belore
it is n good country nud a rich one,
but it will he some time before it is
ripe."
